Building a new shop in my residential back yard. Should be about 46’x26’.
It is in very close proximity to the poco over head lines. Also not far from my existing home service.
I’m thinking it might be better to get a new drop from the poco rather than try and scab a sub panel off the original mid ‘60’s box. I would want at least 6 220 lines available in the new build.
Thoughts?

most pocos charge monthly minimums on secondary services and sometimes even higher rates. some AHJs do not even allow a second service on the same property

before you decide on one router or the other, you need to speak to your PoCo and find out what they will install or wont install for you.

I'd put money into an upgrade at the house (60+ years old is end of life anyway) and tie into that. The added service costs will be expensive.

Why not drop 200A service to the shop and then sub the appropriate amount of power over to the house (100A service?). Do it backwards.

That’s not a bad idea. I think it looks like 3 phase may be on the overhead in the ally!

What makes you think that? Any transformers near that are tapped for 3-P? Having read here and elsewhere about 3-P, I don't quite understand how you would pull phased 120v legs out of the shop. Please explain.

To be younger and wealthy would be nice; but if the POCO doesn't have 3 phase in your neighborhood it probably won't happen, even if you think it would be nice.
And even if they do, they may not be willing to pull it to a house/residential lot
