Power vented garage heaters......the best route to go?

Seems like having a fan to push the fumes out would be the best method

When buying a used NG heater, other than visual inspection for the exhaust vent fan, can you tell that it is power vented with a fan?

Google the make and model information on the manufacturers nameplate.

If you don't get a direct answer to your question, the information you get should lead you to a direct source.

Thanks, I have been looking on CL for used NG heaters, and most people do not knot what they are selling

Seems like a power vent is the way to go

I wasn't sure if you can tell from visually looking at pic, soley based on the position or orientation of the exhaust on the heater (top vs rear)

Gas furnaces are rated by Category, I, II, III or IV. "Power vented" heaters are those that have an after market fan system added to the system. They are positive pressure vent systems. Most Furnaces are "induced" draft, meaning that even with the fan, they can have a negative pressure vent system. In other words the fan is there to get the air fuel mixture across and out of the appliance but are not going to "push" the fumes out. Those units are Cat I. Cat III would have a positive pressure vent, meaning likely a SS sealed vent pipe. No one makes Cat II products. Cat IV are condensing appliances. You want to look at the rating plate on the appliance to see what it needs for a vent system.

New units are less than $500 at Menards.

I don't think you're saving all that much by salvaging a used heater with an unknown pedigree.

That was my thoughts exactly. for only a couple hundred bucks more you get brand new, probably with a warranty. Unless you find a killer deal for a super clean heater with the vent pipe included...

Used heaters sell for $100-$250

If I can save that much money , why not?

I mean, what would really go bad on these heaters?

I prefer used junk

I put a used heater in my old garage. It threw out plenty of heat, but ended up with a failed heat exchanger, which could have killed my son who was working in the garage after school.

Fortunately I got home from work in time to shut the thing off, as I realized there was something wrong.

It's not worth saving a hundred dollars (or three hundred) when new units with a warranty are so cheap.

If you go used, or even new for that matter, please also have a CO detector. The only caveat is if you start the car with the door closed it will go off. Maybe that's not a bad thing really.

I bought a Beacon Morris 45k heater on sale at Menards in September for $389. I'm sure the prices are the highest this time of year though.

Granted, these are not "power vented" heaters, but they are brand new and much cheaper than I thought, thanks for the heads up guys

I think for the added 30,000 BTUs for $50 more, its a better choice!

Free? That's great!
Now that the heating season is just about over.:lol_hitti
Now you have to start thinking about A/C!

Seriously, how did you get it free? Do you know if it works and how old it is?
