Powermatic 1150 Drill Press

I recently acquired an older Powermatic drill press (model# 1150, SN# 67C1082). This is NOT an 1150A variable speed model. It is a rough unit which needs a good bit of work. But I got it for free so who can complain? The end product should be a first rate DP and it will be fun! I will post some pics along the way as I can.

My immediate needs are:
1) To find a useful manual. My online search has so far only yielded manuals for 1970s era machines. That may be be helpful but I would love to find one for this 1967 model. Perhaps someone could provide one or direct me to someone who could.
2) To find a table for it. The one that came with it is severely damaged and I am not really interested in fixing it. I believe I would rather replace it with a milling table (though I don't expect to do much, if any, actual milling with this), if it comes to that.

It came with a 1HP, 3 phase motor that I want to hook up to a VFD since I don't have 3 phase power in my home shop.
It would also be nice to find a good resource besides Ebay for parts.
Every pic I see of this era DP shows a green head with red accents. My head is all red. I suspect that is something done to it later but it looks like it is done well and I wondered if any of them ever came in red from the factory in this era.

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

Here are some pics of the DP. The motor is a simple 3/4 HP unit I mounted just to test it. The unit runs well. No bad noises. I have a 1 HP 3 phase motor I want to mount long term with a VFD speed control. The spring on the quill return is not working right. And the table, not pictured here, is useless. I bought another not running DP with a 3 inch column just for the table and rack to raise and lower it. Will send updates as this unfolds. Oh. It was definitely painted red at some point but was originally green. I don't care about color. Just want a quality DP when it is done.

Good score. It looks like it has a table that maybe was repurposed as a base? Does it have a base below what is in the pictures? Those presses have extraordinarily long strokes, that one is close to 6 inches.

Most of that era are green. When they get painted in funky colors the term used by the OWWM crowd is "Klown Kolors". You are going to want to tear the machine down to replace bearings so you can repaint it to suit your own tastes.

The 3 phase motor is a plus in my book. That give you the ability to vary the speeds on the vfd by changing output frequency. You can find them on Amazon of all places. Get one that matches the HP of the motor. You should be able to run it on 110. And most likely you will need to do bearings on the motor as well.

Congratulations, and getting it for free. You can find PM group on FB for more info and maybe if part is needed

Hey I just acquired the same model drill press. I can’t find the manual anywhere online. I’m desperately trying to understand if my spindle and bearing assembly is correct. Mine only has 2 bearings, a bushing separating the bearings, and a lock collar. all positioned together at the bottom of the shaft closest to the chuck. There was no bearing at the top of the shaft, but the quill has a recess at the top and it looks like a bearing should go there.
Anyway if you had any info about the spindle or manual I would appreciate it. Thanks!

Glad to know someone else has one! As I understand it the first two digits in the serial number indicate the year. Is yours a '67 as well? Did yours come with a table? I would love to see a pic of it. Also what kind of stand do you have or plan to have for it. My project will be done in bursts because I have too many other paying jobs to do. Christmas cutting boards, jewelry boxes and shoeshine kits are on the to do list ahead of it. Just finished a commision for a live edge hall table that was fun.

Here is the drill press and the bearings/spindle in question. I only have 2 bearings at the end of the spindle. Shouldn’t there be a bearing at the top of the spinal as well? If so, mine is missing.

Currently the bearings are stuck about 1/2 way down the shaft. I’m trying to figure out how to get them out the rest of the way without damaging the spindle. Suggestions welcomed

Secondly, if I actually get these bearings off and find replacements, I don’t know the proper assembly and number of bearings. All the manuals I find online are for other variations of the 1150. If someone has manual or diagrams (ANY insight) on the assembly please let me know.

I don't know if these are specific enough to your DP. They work for my 67 model. Hope it helps.

You look like you are farther into yours than I am into mine. I would love to track with you and learn from your experience.

You didn't mention what year your press is but there are manuals out there.

Manual.
Yea that’s the only manual I’ve been able to find and that’s not my exact machine. Not sure what year it is because the name plate is damaged. It’s a 1150 without the variable speed. I can only find manuals with manual speed boxes

Do you have a manual or any documentation you can share with me? Happy to help each other moving forward. Just need to figure out this spindle bearing assembly. I can only find documentation on other models of the 1150

Thanks for these! Unfortunately they don’t match the style of spindle I have. It seems they made a different spindle/bearing arrangement for the year/model I have. I can’t find a lick of information on it. Seems like I’m missing a bearing at the top of the quill. I should likely have a total of 3 bearings. 2 sandwiched together between a bushing with a lock collar, closest to the chuck, and another bearing at the top of the spindle. When I opened it up, there was just the two bearings at the bottom of the shaft closest to the chuck.

Bearings can be sourced by dimension. Get the ID, OD, and width if important and any bearing supply house can cross reference that to whatever precision you want.
