Hi gang,

Looking for any ideas you have for storing PPE - ear muffs, face shields, etc. I currently have them in a drawer in a lateral filing cabinet in the garage, which works ok, but is less than ideal. I've thought about hanging them on hooks on the wall, but that could take up a fair bit of wall space quickly. Any good or creative solutions you've got would be great to see. Thanks.

Good question and I'll be following along to see the ideas that come forth.

Here’s the best one I have seen. It is saved in my gahrajmahal Pinterest feed of garage ideas.

I like 90% of this. Unfortunately hanging earmuffs make them susceptible to sawdust &/or metal bits getting in them (for woodworking or metalworking). So far I haven't been able to think of anything other than "in a drawer" or "in a plastic bag" solutions. b-t-w; hanging them on a coffee can probably eliminates most of these bits from entering the muffs.

As I said above I'll be watching...

I keep glasses, ear muffs, ear plugs, respirators, and dust masks on the top shelf of a cabinet along with cleaning rags, paper towels, and paper bags

It’s got to be convenient or most people will never use it. I would say multiple sets around the different area of the shop (kind of like I have to do with tape measures)

I have a cabinet dedicated to PPE. I have the gloves, glasses, and muffs hanging from hooks on the inside of the cabinet door. The respirator is in a plastic container (one of them ones for shoes) on one of the shelves to keep the dust out of it (in a cabinet in a plastic tote). The welding gear is on a shelf. Extra gloves, glasses, and respirator filters are on another shelf.

I really like that all of it is stored in one central location when you walk in the garage.

Muffs hang over the workbench- each muff closes against the other- so no debris inside!
Safety glasses are next to muffs in a soft cloth bag- faceshield is in cabinet above workbench- pretty much centrally located.

Face shields hang not too far from the wire wheel and grinder, bit I have taken to wearing my prescription safety glasses with side shields whenever I go to the shop or use the chainsaws. Looks dorky, but I have made enough trips to the eye Dr over the years that I’m pretty conscientious about wearing them now.

Hearing protection includes hanging one set of muffs over the front edge of the side Side bed, since I mostly have it around when doing chainsaw or wood splitter work. The CTL and tractor are both common rail cab models, so the noise level is low enough that I don’t need heating protection, or eye for that matter. The little Kubot in the Deere mini excavator is incredibly quiet.

I keep a set of hearing protection off the light stand for use with the angle grinder, and have gone mostly to battery impacts.

I really need a third set of ear protection to hang on the seat of the riding mower, and maybe a forth set to hang with the Stihl weed wacker .

Gloves are stored near most rotating tools. Welding gloves stay on top of the welders.

If it’s not convenient, and handy, I forget it, and that’s why I don’t hide ppe in drawers or cabinets.

I recently started buying cases like this off of Amazon, they are relatively cheap and keep my PPE items clean. This one sits on top of the blast cabinet. The lid has room for additional filters and alcohol swabs to wipe it down occasionally.

I have a couple smaller cases like this for safety glasses and keep them near the equipment They are for visitors or friends using the shop. Earmuffs would fit in these as well, but I prefer ear plugs, so I have a box mounted to the wall.
