Precision ground plate costs

Won a piece of 48"x84"x3/4" precision ground plate at an auction. Has some holes drilled and tapped, but doesn't look like many. Any idea what something like this would go for so I can try to appease the wife (although I know it won't work).

Has a tiny bit of surface rust, but not much.

It's worth what you paid for it. But to buy one that size, new, you are looking at a few thousand dollars.

BTW....how about a few pics of the plate?

That would make a Hell of a nice fab table.

Yeah, definitely the plan.

Looking at metalsdepot.com, seems a piece of hot rolled 3/4" in that size would be about $700. No clue on grinding costs. Here's a pic.

Lima is only about an hour away from me. Nice find for sure.

Nice. Mind if I stay in your garage for a few weeks? My wife will not be happy I bought this. Just picked up a big 28" drill press yesterday I bought from an auction. Oh well, that plate will be a great foundation to a bed to sleep in.

Edit--My plan now is to look for boxer puppies around Lima, OH to distract the wife with. So if you know of any, let me know :)

To the OP.

1) Don't tell your wife how much you paid. Tell her how much you saved!

2) Try to convince her it's Platinum! If you get lucky, she might believe you.

quick calculation I come up with raw material (856 lb) price around $1000. That's before any grinding fee.

No....I'm thinking you just about stole that plate. If it gets real bad at home I will come get it from you and give ya $300 for your trouble.....not a problem.

30 cents a pound. That's what a local steel retailer sells the drops for.

If this was considered a drop it would still be $300 at your $.30 a pound.

And I don't know of any yard that would consider a 48x96 plate a drop.

Add in the grinding and you get $600+ for a very nice very flat table top.

Lol, hopefully it won't get to that :)

It is a good deal, IF you have a use for it. But if it is just going to sit in the corner and collect dust, that's another issue.

Definitely have a use for it. I had bought a couple 3'x5'x1/2" plate pieces off craigslist a year or two back to make a welding table, but they were bowed and rusty (but cheap). This will be much, much better.

I'll double your money and bring you a boxer puppy or two.

Mike

Not going to show this to the wife. I do not need 2 dogs in teh house.

I really need to quit hitting up auctions. Couldn't let a piece of 2" plate (33"x51") go too cheaply. Got this one for $60, which isn't bad for a 950 chunk of steel.

Really need to buy a forklift if I'm going to keep doing this. Really don't have a use for it, and only bid $50 thinking surely someone else will out-bid me. But, I'm sure I can find some use for it.
