Last time the power went out, I wasn’t home, the generator was behind some junk and under a workbench. Not thrilled with having to dig it out and contend with spiders to get to it, then several attempts to pull start it unsuccessfully; I had an unhappy wife.
Don’t want to fork out the funds for a new one - and really don’t feel like there’s anything wrong with the old one (That is, if I ignore the fact that it is ridiculously loud).
I bought it used several years ago and it has never failed to start on a few pulls for me so… Time for an upgrade!

I ordered this electric start kit on Ebay from generatorpartswholesale.

pretty impressed with the quality.

The motor has a starter location in the casting but does not have a hole for the starter 92DF5480-857F-4FDC-9DCB-8B8D34688E56.jpeg
the starter measures 65mm. A carbide hole saw ordered from the from the Bezos empire (65mm / 2-9/16”) worked slick.

I measure the gap at the stator before disassembly at .33mm so I put it back at that space on the new flywheel.

Got an ATV battery and made a tray for it. Made little battery cables by adding terminals to some 10ga wire. Then just a piece of nylon strap to hold it.

For the wheel, I just drilled through the frame and pushed 1/2” all-thread through for axels, then added bushing sleeves to build out to 5/8” to fit the 10” wheels (also ordered from the empire).
I elected to use these because everything I have with 10” pneumatic tires seem to be flat about 100% of the times that I actually use them.

drilled a hole in the panel under the oil light and put the key switch there.

Then a good cleaning and it looks like new.
I’m super happy with the upgrades!

Starts right up and rolls like an off road vehicle.

well - couldn’t leave well enough alone, so I decided to pull the spark plug and check it.
Plug looked fine, but when I went to put it back in… what the heck is going on with the threads.
looks like it was already cross threaded at the top and the PO used some sealer or something
on it. Notice the grey and brown stuff…

Couldn’t get the plug to align or start, so off to O’riles for a M14x1.25 Helicoil.

I still didn’t want to take a chance on leaving any behind so I had to use my custom spark plug hole sucker (patent pending 😀)
