am ready to start framing garage, and have reached a problem for man door rough in . For man door I was looking to install door without threshold or bottom sill plate as the slab of garage will be level with out side carport slab, giving me the ability to roll out equipment to car port. is it okay to remove bottom sill from prehung door and use a deeper door sweep??
or does a prehung door need the bottom member.

If you anchor it well enough to the framing it should be fine. To keep everything square I'd leave in place until it is installed and then cut it out. You could also cut it out before install and trim the bottom of the vertical legs to get the bottom of the door closer to the floor to reduce your door sweep size.

I've seen exterior doors without a lower threshold but I bet they cost five times as much because they are special.

I did what you are contemplating on a man door at my previous shop... I regretted it. Just in case you haven't considered...

You'll have to install some sort of weatherstripping to the bottom of the door.... and whatever you use you can pretty much guarantee you'll have water infiltration from outside into your building.

In-swing or out-swing door?
  • If it's in-swing the weatherstrip will rub the floor all the way into the building.

Sloped slab?
  • Depending on door location and left hand or right hand swing the door has the possibility of hanging up on the concrete.

Thresholds are there for good reason.

thanks baada, was thinking along those lines... screw in support member across bottom of door, cut out bottom sill, shorten frame, install and remove supports

thanks Lake, door will be inswing over descending grade should only rub at jamb where entry is level. carport is attached to garage with 8' overhang not worried about rain infiltration.

You can order a a sill that will allow you to roll things .. having the sill makes for a better install.
