Fellow GJers,

I wanted to share my latest find. I was at a warehouse auction and missed out on some larger vises when this one came up. It was being used on a drill press and I didn't have much opportunity to inspect it, but for $8 I was in!

It looks like an unoriginal base, a bolt to tighten the swivel, and some weld repairs on the jaws... other than that it's all there!

How did I do?

Dustin

29: i haven't seen that Prentiss model vise before. not that I've seen them all, but I've seen more than a few and i might own 20 of them. I really like that model with the pipe jaws.

there's too much weld on those jaws for a collector, but i'm guessing the vise works. or if you find another one the pipe jaws are usually missing on most old vises and you have a good screw, vise nut and maybe a swivel to work on a different Prentiss. well worth more than $8.

nice find

Does anyone know of a reason not to grind these welds to look better before I repaint?

That's probably brazed. Grind away if you want. You'll only lose character and history. (Which I think is cool on beaters).

Once wire wheeled that braze may shine brass/goldish and look super cool. WIpe down with minwax or your favorite ??? whatever.

EDIT: I definitely grind the side profiles. That looks like **** IMO. But the tops are up to you as well.

I would be slightly concerned about the weld/braze. but the jaws look to be in good condition. For $8, I would definately slaps some paint on it, regrease the slide, and use the heck out of it.
