Found this Prentiss on CL local to my father, he went and picked it up today. Sorry for the crappy pic, only thing I have at the moment. Pretty much confirmed talking to the seller, but validated when I just spoke to my Dad, it's a Prentiss 22. Won't actually see it until Friday when he arrives, but starting to think about whether it's going to go on my bench or on a post in the garage, should be interesting. He said it's in nice shape, appears to have led a "sheltered" life as far as big vises goes, no hammer marks, jaws are straight and level, screws in/out smoothly.

After overpowering my little Wilton 645 last night, I may even be able to convince my wife that I "needed" this thing

Jaws are 6". Not sure on weight exactly, catalog says 168lbs. My old man said, "It's heavy", that's all the estimate I could get out of him...didn't want to push it being that he has to figure out how to get it out of his van at some point today =)

Nice find. I wonder if the rear swivel jaw is freed-up on it, or if you'll have to do it. Looks like it may still have the pin to hold that jaw in place - that's cool.

Definitely throw a bunch of pics up when you get it.

A 1925 ad for the #22 Prentiss has it at 6" jaws, and 168 lbs.

EDIT - you beat me to it!

Yep, definitely hoping the swivel jaw is free, but will deal with it if not. After seeing so many with the swivel pin missing, I was glad to see this one is present. The guy did say he never tried to swivel the base so not sure if it is free, so that's a question mark as well. My father said it's not crusty, just surface rust, so hopefully it's been stored inside and should come apart easily.

Well, vise has arrived. It's a big old nasty thing for sure, wasn't prepared for how large the swivel base is on this thing. It has some war wounds, but no cracks that I could see, jaws are a little out of line, but it closes up square and the jaws are very nice. Swivel release handle is frozen enough to not move by hand, didn't have time to mess with the swivel jaw. I'll have to mess with it after returning from vacation. Not fun getting it from the two wheel dolly up to the bench, and if I bench mount it, definitely going to need some reinforcement.

That's my 5" Wilton 645 for scale

It's not beat to death, but they definitely used the top of the vise as a workspace, and the top of the slide to some extent.

Exteremely jealous. My Prentiss #92 pales in comparison (at least size-wise, I still love it)...

What are your plans - full restore, or a nice light cleaning and lube / oil / no filter, or what?

Congrats - that beast is rare, large and in charge.

Full resto, I'm not really a "patina" guy. Clean enough that resto shouldn't be too hard, size of the thing will make it a little more challenging. Cleaned up with some nice paint it should pop pretty well just due to its size, anyone know factory color for a Prentiss?

Biggest I'd seen previously was a Prentiss 20, I can't imagine what the 8" models like a Columbian 108 must be like...

Hmm Another one of these. Now to figure out how to get to his place, talk him out of it, get the monster loaded into my truck without breaking my back. Then give it a nice home next to my dad's #22..... but he would not fall for that. DRAT!

Grats on the Prentiss 22! They are a really large and heavy monster. autopts made the mistake of shipping me one from an Ebay seller in his area. My swivel jaw was rusted in place and it took about 35 minutes to free it up. Then I just broke out the machinist dye and crocus cloth. Dye it.....check for the scrape marks....dye it....repeat. It now swivels with 2 fingers of pressure. Since I am at work, I can't see yours (Net Nanny filters out photo hosting sites....sigh) but I will check it out when I get home today. I got very lucky on mine. The swivel lock works so freely that it is scary. My 19 1/2 takes a gorilla and a prybar to lift. The other reason that I got lucky is that autopts probably tried listing my 22 on CL before he finally shipped it to me. Sneak into a guy's basement once or twice and he gets all hostile about missing vises. Sheesh.
