Prentiss #23

Just joined today. I have found a Prentiss 23 that is in excellent unrestored condition. I am somewhat new to the large vise world, and I really want this vise. I think it is probably way overpriced at $1000, but it is double cool. Thoughts?

Even at $1K I would snag it in a heartbeat, and I don't even know that much about vises compared to many here. Couple reasons for my answer, they didn't make a lot of them. They are high quality from what I know, and lastly, I'm sure some that are trying to sell a similar vise in that size and quality are asking twice as much.

It was listed at $35.00 dollars in 1896, now if we use the inflation calculator of $35.00 dollars in 1896 to 2023 =, that same cost comes out to $1279.38 dollars. So yes $1000.00 is a very good deal.

If it is complete and isn’t damaged, I’d say it’s worth a thou’
I assume you have adequate $$$ and spending a grand on something you really want won’t affect your family or anything like that. Lots of guys blow a grand on a golfing weekend with their buddies and then have absolutely nothing to show for it,

It is in excellent condition from what I can see. I would of course tear it apart and tune it all up. Then build a heavy pedestal base. Sounds like a great project. I will post some pics when I have it in my possession.

I agree. I have not seen many 7" vises for under a thousand dollars. And I don't think any old iron is going down in value.

Make sure no crack on the top of the slide. Usually the are in the middle and start at the back edge of the slide. Here is an extreme example.

That would be very disappointing. But I did not see any cracks or repairs anywhere on the vise.

Thats a great price even if it needs a little tune up.
