I bought a Prentiss #5 last weekend to upgrade the size of my vise. This one is a 6” made in the 20’s. It was a fun weekend project.

-oxy/acetylene brazed the crack in the slide, and a hairline crack in the nut
-moved the mounting holes for the jaws for new threads to be drilled and tapped
-in the process of making the jaws out of 52100 tool steel
- degreased, wire brushed, painted

MT: your work on that old 100+ year old Prentiss is great. if you'd also like to post these before and after pics over on the vise repair 101 thread i'd appreciate it cause we don't have a lot of good braze welders over there. if you have more pics and more information on how you brazed it even better.

here's the link:

Drivesitfar, yes absolutely I will add it over on the 101 thread. I will do my best to describe the brazing, but didn’t get photos of it. I appreciate the warm welcome, and I’m excited to start using the new vise.

Thanks Fretters! I’m just learning how to use the long pinstriping brushes and 1shot paint. I have a long way to go to make it look pro but it’s fun.

Thanks Roberts. It’s a Sidney model 32, 16”, herringbone lathe. Sidney was right up there with Monarch back in the day. The herringbone gears are a sight to see. Amazing engineering, very quiet. The big Sidney is great for working on cars. Machining is just a hobby without any formal training.

I uploaded a video of it running at about the 11:00 minute mark.

great looking vise and really nice lathe too.

like I mentioned on the Vise Repair 101 thread I can't recall anybody using Por15 on their vises or pulling a stuck swivel pin like you did. also there are not many that are making their own heat treated steel jaws either.

I hope you find more good threads to post some of your thoughts and your cool tools on and if you need any help just ask

we have a PM (where you can send a Private message sort of like email to members if you need to ask something that you don't want to post online, but I like to ask tool related stuff online so the public and members can see us work through our issues).

if you go in your GJ profile you can set your post views per page to 100 instead of 10 or 20 in case you have time to read a long thread and click on AVITAR and post up a favorite picture (you can change this later like I did when I found the bison made of scrap steel) and that should get you started.

take care!!

Great job on the restoration. Looks like your vise has a case of early stage Prentiss Pox. Something to keep an eye on.
