Prentiss Model #22 Vise Questions & Approximate Value

I thought I had a thread on this, but couldn't find it.

It has the graffiti script, and is mounted to a nice, heavy duty table.
However, it sat outside, and is pretty rusted up. Does work though. Also, the jaw doesn't open on it's own when you unscrew it...some broken collar or something IIRC?

What would be a fair price for the vise, and the little (maybe 4x4') but heavy duty table it's mounted on?

Honestly, they'll probably give it to me for free, but still...

Sorry, no pictures ATM, hoping to get some over Christmas Break if at all possible.

is it this rusty or have you seen it yet? this Prentiss I have has a steel plate under the swivel and so much rust I can't tell whether the plate is welded on or how it is stuck there. yes a vise for free is a good deal, but as you already know sometimes you really get what you paid for. pictures of yours before or after you pick it up would be great.

i'm not sure whether my Prentiss is going in an "E" bath, molasses or diesel, but it is getting a shower one way or another before I decide. look at the jaws on my Prentiss that have really clean lines for a 100 year old vise. ithink mine might be a #21 or a #19. it does have the swivel pull pin base along with the swivel jaw.

The jaw not opening should be an easy fix. Prentiss usually had a C clip or a collar that looks like a castle nut. If it's loose or missing then the jaw will close fine, but won't open by twirling the handle. Also check to see if the pin for the rear jaw is still there and if it comes out.

Consider the amount of time you'll need to put into it before making an offer. That's a pretty good size vise and could be a nice one to have.

I work for them and they've given everyone else besides me a little "gift" like transfer tanks, generator, etc so I think free would be doable

Mine isn't that rusty!!!
It's in surprsiing good shape for being under a tree outside. I did hammer it with WD40 a few times though.

I'll get some pictures as soon as I can.

sounds like a big Prentiss, ok condition and at the right price.

funny how Prentiss had their #'s on their vises. I own a 19 (or 21) that is not that big, a #26 that is a woodworkers vise, and I think it's a 92 that is mid size and Outlaw thinks is late 1800's.

one person tried making a chart on all of the Prentiss vises and posted it on the internet, but it still has a lot of holes if you are curious and want to take a look.

according to the chart yours was made around 1923, weighs 165 pounds and cost $60. My Rock Island 577 I just bought was made in 1935, 170 pounds and cost $9.97 so either the Prentiss ones were top, top of the line or the depression killed the economy.

They are worth next to nothing or scrap metal prices. I can send you an address to ship them to and i will send you market value for scrap or some coupons for the nearest Wing Stop

If that little pin is sitting inside the rear jaw and really frozen, its gonna take more then WD-40 to get it out. There are lots of inventive ways to remove them but worry about that after you get your hands on the vise.

Like Bl00 was saying, Prentiss vises used a "castle nut" to mate the operating handle to the dynamic jaw. Not all did but they are out there and, unfortunately, a pain to work on. The bad news is they used a cast iron nut, not mild steel so when you try to lift up one of the locking fingers, they usually break off. The good news it there are many fingers to choose from so you can just bend down another one in its place. The really bad news is you only have so many to work with before they are all broken off

I've decided to avoid the hassle and just replace them with a standard collar with 2 locking set screws. It works the same and i keep the "castle nuts" around for spare parts.

I mean that base was frozen, I believe the top part lifts, I just haven't tryed to turn it. Can I see some pictures of yours so I know exactly what you're talking about?

OK, so a little update: The dynamic jaw has been sand blasted and primed, while the static and swivel base have been soaking. I will clean them up this summer, paint, and get back to you. The biggest issue is freeing up the swivel, at this point.
