All,
This is only my second post. I know there are some amazing tool experts on this forum so I'm hoping one or more of you are Prentiss Vise experts. I picked up a lot of tools in an auction today and one was this vintage Prentiss vise. I can't find this particular model in any archive.org catalogs. Looks like maybe it had a swivel base at one point looking at the second picture but hard to tell for sure. For a Prentiss, it's relatively small. The jaw is only 3 inches wide. I was after the Ward's Master Quality cantilever tool box (3rd photo) in the auction so I was thinking about selling this vise but the more I look at it and handle it, the more I love it. Questions for you: Have any of you seen this model before? If so, please tell me what you know. Judging from this particular logo, any idea how old it is? Any idea what it might be worth on ebay?
Thank you!

I could be wrong, but it looks to me like it was originally a thru the bench swivel type vise, that someone drilled the 2 holes to bolt it to a bench. Again I could be wrong, but I think without the OEM mounting parts it's not worth a whole lot. It was a lower end exposed screw vise to start with, I'm guessing worth about $25., even that would be a tough sell around here, IMO.

Nice enough little vise to use, I'd second the low value, but I'd say $35 to $50 because of the name.

Get a can of red spray paint, paint it all including the screw and slide, and put it on craigslist for $150. That's what everyone else does. Measure how far apart you can get the jaws, and list that as the size.

You all are fantastic. Each of you provided some great info. Looking at what Akasrick sent over. It appears that is indeed a through the bench swivel type vise as 454ragtop suggested. I was glad to see that the two mounting holes are original to the vise and not drilled later. I agree with SSdave. It's a nice enough little vise to use so I think I'll clean it up and use it.
akasrick, The catalog scan you posted really helped. Thank you. I was amazed that you had it and archive.org didn't. do you have the full catalog or a higher res pic? any idea how old my vise might be base on what you see in my photos?
Thanks again, All!!

An 1886 catalogue.

How to the weights etc. compare looking at the posted Shepherd adv. against what you have and what is shown on that spreadsheet?

Hi,

I have a Prentiss Vise catalog that I think is from the 1920s-1930s - it has no date indication anywhere but the graphics are "art-deco" looking.

Anyway, there is a page with your 161 1/2 vise cataloged - here are a few pics:
