Prentiss Vise Restoration

Taking advise and inspiration from many of the beautiful vise restorations on here I managed to restore an old prentiss vise with a slight spin. Used heat browning of slide and other parts then dipped in oil to create nice bronze color and rust protection!

Have a question about the brass tag, haven’t seen photos of a prentiss with this and was wondering if this is uncommon or special?

Any idea what year this may be from? It has a stamp that says “patented 1911”

Black finish is actually rustoleum flat black enamel over self etching primer. I read that they had an original paint color of flat black so wanted to stay close to original. And this will be easy to touch up once I start beating on it. Just watched a video on the sculpt nouveau, thanks for the idea! Looks like a cool product

I think the brass tags were to commemorate some special anniversary at the company, I don’t know for sure. Most Prentiss vises have the usual cast in lettering within that circular recess in the main vise body.

I like that finish. How did you get the copper finish look? Is that paint?

Great job. I'm doing something similar to a 515-525 using a bluing agent to darken the slide and will apply BLO as a protectant over the darken metal. I chose a flat darkened red for my color choice.

I really like that bronze finish. What oil did you use for the dip?
