Hey all! Just found this place! Hoping yall can help me...
Bought my first house a month ago, previous owner was machinist here in Charleston, WV.
House is a lost cause, unfortunately. Had hoped to fix up and move in, but too much water damage on foundation. (In my unlearned opinion, lol)
However, tucked away amongst all the rough sawn lumber from '32 (year house was built), and porcelain tile stacked haphazardly, and buried (that's right!) around the place, I found this beauty.
Now I'm a coal miner not a metal worker so I'm not sure if the little bit of damage I see is enough to write her off or not.
What do you guys think?

You need to keep that tile because tile is coming back and will be worth big money some day. And I will be over to get that vise out of your way. lol. Nice find.

Thanks! I sure hope you're right about the tile. I can't bring myself to just throw it all in the trash. Some of it is really gorgeous stuff. As far as the Bull Dog goes, does the damage make it not usable? It's not locked up at any joint. Its a strong piece of machinery for sure.

The vise is still useable, don't toss it. Can't speak for the tile, it does look nice.

You found a 100 year old vise on your new property. If you want to use it, there's no reason why you can't. Clean it up and use it. The only thing is that it will have almost no monetary value other than in parts should you decide to sell it. Most people steer clear of broken/repaired vises.

don't let that chip discourage you. That vise is probably 100 years old. Bring it back to life and it'll last another 100. There's plenty of info and experts here to help you with anything you might need. To put it another way, I've been collecting vises for almost ten years, and I've only managed to acquire one Prentiss vise. good find!

Just kidding on the tile. That is a keeper, and you will get many good uses and years out of that vise.

Keep that Prentiss of your's!
It's worth cleaning up.
But.....I know it's your vise and everything....
Please resist the advise to paint it with a rattle can, then fuss over the correct color, AND highlight the lettering!!

I keep thinking what an ole coal miner like my dad would say about my Purple Prentiss with Mauve highlights!!

Finding a Prentiss Vise was a stroke of good luck, many of us would be very happy to be in your shoes.

I suspect the "reason" you've only acquired one Prentiss vise is because you aren't willing to pay for them. They certainly aren't hard to find.

That's part of it. I really haven't had many come up in my area and most are broken. Especially compared to say Columbians or even the million dollar Wilton Bullets lol.
