Prep for Topcoat

Hi GJ,

I've let my initial epoxy layer set longer past the re-coat time for applying a topcoat.

Given the circumstances, what would I need to adequately prep the floor? I reached out to my manufacturer and they recommended a light sand and wipe down with denatured alcohol.

I can do that - but I do need my hand held here a bit - what would I use to do that? Also would the gloss I sand away from the epoxy be restored with the top coat?

I have 900 sq ft. I was thinking about just sanding with 200 grit with a pole sander, and wiping with denatured alcohol. I just wanted to run by GJ - is there a better solution?

Thanks in advance

Yes. If you want to save yourself from all that labor, rent a floor maintainer with a green or black scrub pad. It will degloss and rough up the floor enough for the clear coat application. Follow up with the chemical wipe as instructed. The floor will look hazy, but the minute you apply the clear coat it will bring back the rich color and gloss. If you use a pole sander, use a minimum of 150 grit sandpaper.

Exactly what I needed. Thanks a million, Shea!

Shea was right on, a buffer with 3M type pad makes short order of scratching up the surface lighlty for adhesion. Wipe down as instructed above

Which topcoat would you use for an exterior/uv exposed floor after prep is done? I understand that yours is not exterior though.

If you are looking for a non-yellowing topcoat, use our SPGX 1 part Polyurea.
