Preparing for concrete

What would be appropriate here. Should I backfill on top of this around the post with dirt or should I use gravel here? It looks like most are about 2-3 inches below ground level.

I would just pack dirt around. Really doesn't matter because it going to be for looks really

It won’t be visible one the floor is poured. Just had the through water may drain away better with gravel.

We don't do it that way in NY. The treated wood will shrink, water will go between the concrete and the wood, and freezing weather will explode the concrete. Must be ok in NC.

Yes, here it is engineered that way and inspected for the concrete. I tell you though it’s probably not so much for longevity as it is to prevent a building being lifted out of the ground with wind. Our frost line is only 12” here so no worry with the freeze thaw so much.

I would backfill the depression with crushed stone to level the sub grade for the slab, Your slab will be less likely to crack if placed on level ground especiallly when using a vapor barrrier, i’d also wrap the posts with expansion foam to isolate them from the concrete,
