Prepping for coating...

Leaning towards the Rust Bullet right now, but am curious as to how to prep, or to what extent I'll need to prep prior to application?

Garage floor is original to house, circa 1993. It appears to have never been sealed or coated previously (is there any way to confirm this?)

There are a handful of small oil stains on the floor, and a few minor cracks which I intend on filling.

The floor will primarily be used for my wife to park, and for me to build hot rods; no harsh chemicals or spills, just everyday dirt and grime.

Any help or suggestions appreciated.

Thank you.

Great post and great questions! Typically with Rust Bullet there is no grinding or etching involved. You will want to treat those oil stains. Tons of ways to do that from tide and simple green to kitty litter. We offer the Pour N Restore Product which ***** the oil out and MetalBlast to degrease the surface. Makes for a great combination.

Your question about testing the concrete for previous coatings is also important. Take some water and place it on several spots on the floor. If it penetrates you are in good shape. If it does not, there was a sealer in place before and you will need to remove it.

I would do that same test in the areas you remove the oil. If the water beads, your not done yet.

Other than that, just get your floor clean... Hose it off, power wash it, scrub it, whatever you prefer.

If you decide on something else, other than Rust Bullet, you will likely need to grind.

I am leaning towards RB as well. How quickly should the water adbsorb? Also, how long does it take for the product to dry so that you can move back in?

Thanks!

Spray a small amount on the surface. Dees it bead or does it absorb and darken the concrete?

It takes 72 hours from the last stroke at 70% RH before you can move back in. We do not suggest moving back in earlier, but if it is very cold or very dry, give it an extra day

Wow...what a quick response!

I dribbled some water on the surface, and there still is some sitting on top, but it definitely seemed to absorb some and darken the concrete.

OK when it doubt test further. If your not confident that water is being absorbed at a normal rate, I would apply a small amount of Rust Bullet, wait 72 hours and try and pull it up.
