Prepping workbench for painting

I had my workbench welded from an angle iron. It's got blackish residue and some surface rust. I plan to paint using regular Rustoleum paint to match my car lift.

What is the easiest quickest way to prep metal?

Best way is to sand blast it. Or run a grinder/sander over it...

Wire brush to get the big chunky stuff off. Wipe down with paint thinner. Sand with DA or skuff with scotch brite. Prime, Paint, Enjoy.

Do I need that much work really? It's rustoleum, supposed to work over light rust, no?

Lol yeah. Just paint the damn thing! People trying to complicate a metal workbench that is going to be used and abuse.

I googled around and came up with the same plan what welder suggested. Just wipe it off with a rag and acetone to get rid of blackish oil. I might do wirebrush on visible parts and than just do 2 coats of rustoleum

You should prime it if it's bare metal. And you should get rid of the rust. Priming and painting takes a lot less time than painting two coats.

It depends on what you want for an end result. Paint will not stick to grease, oil, dust or dirt. Wipe it clean with acetone or thinner first. It also keeps the imputities from being worked into the metal. The wire bursh will remove the loose stuff and primer is what sticks to bare metal best, and fills small imperfections. Paint then sticks to the primer and makes a slicker topcoat.
