Preserving metal labels under paint?

Hello All,
Recently acquired a pedestal grinder stand that has a been repainted a few times, covering over the original label/tag. Any suggestions how best to remove the top layer(s) of black paint without removing whatever paint/finish might be on the original label/tag. The label is a metal plate riveted on. I believe it is a Black & Decker 'grinder pedestal' from what I can make out. Thanks for you thoughts.....
