Hello all, a friend gave me a Ryobi model RY80030, pressure wash "as-is" which wouldn't start. I installed a new carburetor and now it starts every time first pull. Now I'm working with the detergent pickup which is outputting full positive pressure. It seems to me that there should be a check valve to keep it sucking soap, not blowing full pressure. I couldn't find the correct part so I bought a generic detergent in line check valve. The problem is that both fittings are barbed, I am not sure that ordinary hose clamps with this plastic tubing will hold that much pressure (it's a 3000 psi. pump).

What should I try next? Thanks, Jim

The only soap pickup tubes I'm familiar with are a venturi on the inlet side of the pump. They'll see water line pressure, not 3000 PSI.

Here's a photo of the connections.

This may be a case of operator error. Believe it or not, I read the directions. They say that the engine should be started first. I can then turn on the garden hose input so that the venturi can now operate correctly without ever seeing full pressure at the soap connection. I'll try this later and let you know. Thanks, Jim

Plug that off and don't mess with it. Get a garden weed sprayer, apply soap with that. Some like industrial purple needs dillution if you are not putting it on pre-paint, will eat paint. Pressure wash soap is milder like car wash stuff.

Take off your barbed fitting and see if the ball is missing stuck etc. If its missing or you can't repair then buy one like this and carry on.

I've never heard of starting the engine before the water so I'd be weary of doing that. My craftsman pressure washer has an identical soap injector and it works well turning the water on first.

Thanks all, I went to Lowe's and bought a 1/8NPT pipe plug and it fit perfectly. I'll use it that way for a while, but since I'm an incurable perfectionist, I've probably try to fix the OEM check valve. jswain mentioned the ball from the check valve, and if there ever was one, I'll probably lost it. Thanks for all the support. Jim

Good news. I called Ryobi this morning and found that the detergent injector "kit" is available under the part number 308452002 from Gardner 877-634-5704 for the grand total of $1.95 plus first class postage. That includes the ball, spring and the brass fitting. The 1/8" NPT brass plug cost me more than that. I think I'll take the gamble and buy it after all. Wish me luck. I'll let you know how it works out. Thanks, Jim
