Pressure washer not working correctly

I have an older (probably 15 years old) craftsman pressure washer with a Briggs 6.75 horse engine. The original pump went bad when I left water in it and it froze so I bought a replacement pump on EBay. The pressure washer works correctly for about 10 minutes. After that time the washer will only run when the handle is pulled. If you release the handle the washer dies. After several more minutes the engine begins smoking a little from the muffler and will not start at all. I can put it up and get it back out the next day and the whole thing starts over. Any ideas what my problem might be?

The first thing you need to check is the unloader valve. It should open and bypass the discharge pressure back to the intake, when you close the trigger on the gun. Would appear the problem is there.

Is it overheating? How is the oil level and how does the oil look and smell?
The oil is fine, both level and appearance and smell. How would one know if a small engine is overheating?

It seems that replacement unloader valves are inexpensive, but how does one know which one to buy? Is there a certain spec to look for? IIRC my pump is a 2800 psi.

Photo or identify pump brand/maker. Horizontal or vertical?

You can check the operation of your unloader valve by disconnecting it from the pump intake. Start it with the trigger open, when closed it should gush out a ton of water.

A picture would really help.

You can rebuild the unloader by taking it apart and cleaning it(removing the mineral deposits inside it). Just measure the height of the release nut before unscrewing it and dismantling it. I have done a few without any problems, they get dirty and stick shut.

The pump as shown. AR's usually trouble free. Unloader? not sure there would be one on those small units. Think there is just like on over flow hole that spits out.

Isn't the unloader the thing with the spring on the bottom of the 2nd picture I posted? Just under the inlet
