prevailing torque locknut vs serrated flange nut

Hi guys,

i need to reassemble my gas tank skid on my tj and the nuts that hold the skid to the tj are 5/16-18 serrated flange nuts.

i've been trying to find serrated flange nuts with also a deformed thread but am coming up blank. what are you opinion on the two different type of fasteners?

Use cone nuts.

Both aren't very efficient.

Nord-Lock has some (two-part) washers that really do something, but they're not exactly cheap. I'd use LocTite.

neat, looking up those nord-locks, but can't verify the part numbers between their regular washers and their new "X" series. MSC Direct was no help distinguishing which are which on their end.

i think i'm just going to try to get my hands on some nice grade 8 (gold finish) serrated flange nuts and "deform" the top thread myself

You're looking for a top lock flange nut. They do exist, but I've only seen them in clear zinc. I'm sure there is a mfr that makes them in yellow zinc.

I have used just serrated flange nut with blue locktite and never had a problem at all on my cj tank

Given the application I don't see the need for both serrated and prevailing torque.

I have to ask why?
