Well.... my particular problem isn't in the garage, but many garages DO have water/baths, so perhaps the conversation will be helpful to others.

Our dishwasher had a slow leak for months, although we were not aware of it. The dishwasher sat on the subfloor, so the leak continually went under the linoleum floor, so it was invisible to us.

Last week, the valve burst and about 100 gallons of water (or so) flooded under the floor and into the basement. We're now in the midst of insurance/cleanup/no-kitchen hell. Ugh.

Anyways, there are systems where you use remote sensors in at-risk locations to sense moisture. The sensors report back to a valve controller that shuts off the main water supply in the event of any leaks in your home/garage.

Seems like a very good way to go.

Who knows more about this topic and can bring me up to speed? Brands to look for? Anything else you can think of?

Only thing that I've seen was on This Old House was a pan under the washing machine with a detector that shut off the water valve at the supply. So they do exist, I just don't know where. Do you have a decent plumbing supply house near?
