I'd say shop around if your not in any big hurry. The ceiling is the biggest pain to do, especialy if you don't have any help. Walls are pretty darn easy though, particularly if you go with the 4'X8' sheets. There should be a common sq. ft. installed price with both material and labor for your particular area so like I said earlier just do some more shopping. Off the subject just a bit but some years back I hired a guy to just tape & texture my one car garage, it was about a 10'X24' & had about 10' tall walls. I believe he charged me around $200 or so for that. I also had an entire basement taped & textured by a different guy for around $400. Keep in mind that drywall comes mainly in 4'X8's or 4'X12's, I'd go with the 5/8 on a ceiling or any fire-wall for that matter, most places have that as code. Maybe catch a drywall guy off the side on a weekend so he can make some extra $$$ off the clock!

I have always had the problem of hiring someone, that didn't/couldn't do the job..as well as I/we could.

My last sheet rocker,(my current house) was fired 1/2 - 3/4 of the way into the job. I purchased 10,000 screws,(2 large boxes) only to find out that he used less than 500 :( The 10,000 screw purchase was his request, not mine. I had a 28 x 40 man cave,(with the remainder) to do after he left.

Most rockers can hang about 2000 sq ft in a day, and start finishing in that same day. If you want yours screwed and NOT nailed, I would suggest/require an inspection before finishing. (I skipped this part...once)

99 times out of a hundred, you get what you pay for.

Check, recheck, and confirm ALL work that was done previously. If the company is new/recently formed, you might be rolling the proverbial dice.

With times being what they are, you might want to consider putting an ad in the paper for bids.

Just a few helpful hints:

1) NEVER pay until a "satisfied" inspection is performed! Regardless of payment splitting.(1/3 or 1/2 or whatever)

2) ALWAYS make a written contract! This will protect you! (and sometimes him/her..if you are a **** about the job)

3) When you tell the contractor that you are happy, make damn sure you are! because, in a year or two, you won't have a leg to stand on when the contract is brought up :)

Some other considerations (to do it yourself):

1) Since ceilings are the biggest pain when "hanging" sheetrock, you may consider a purchase/rental of a panel jack. I was working 12-15 hour days, 6 days a week. (I had NO time!) This only applies if you can actually hang it :bounce:

2) You can always sell the jack, after you are done. The money you "might" lose will be money in the bank, after the fact.

3) After you complete the "hanging", finishers are sometimes easier AND cheaper to find, than a full service rocker.

In short, do your homework. You won't be sorry. "If" you are, its your fault..NOT the contractors :)

Well I can get a drywall lift for 62 bucks for two days from sunbelt. So its cheaper than buying, There is a guy on C/L who has had one for sale for at least a year. wants too much money. I can do it, I just don't WANT to do it, Figure if I can pay someone 250 bucks to install it, Its worth it to me.

I live in the Cincinnati area and I have talked to two different guys and they both get $20 a board to hang and finish.

EDIT: and that with me buying all the material.

Got more done before I quit for the night, I'll get some pics tomorrow, Don't know how I would have gotten it done without that drywall lift. I have decided I'll buy one listed in another thread for when I do the walls and I'll sell it on C/L.

I picked up this 4 ft scaffold from Lowes, Used the 10% off coupon in the address change package from the post office..lol Works great very sturdy..

GOod choice. I see you just have a regular cordless drill, do you have the drywall tip for it? or are you just guesstimating whether it's flush or not?

Its a dewalt 1/4 inch impact driver, with a Phillips bit, I get em to where they are just make a little dimple in the paper.Ii have a dewalt 1/2 cordless with a clutch, but its not very consistent with the depth, you think you have found the perfect setting and then the next one blows right though the rock..lol So I gave up and just use the impact , it works great.

The nicest drill i own is actually a drywall gun. It's a makita, she's quite nice. It's actually not mine it's my parents. I've helped install lots of drywal. I'm sitting in a 12x15 room that i helped install the drywall and the room under me is my bedroom and i helped drywall that too. Ive found drywall ain't that hard to do. Kudos to you for doing it yourself!

Looks good, I did mine as well, but I paid a couple of friends in beer to help me out 32X40, I am in the middle of doing a horrible job of mudding it:lol_hitti I think if I had someone come in now to finish up it would cost more cause of the poor job I'm doing that they would have to fix.It looks fine once done but it's probably taking me 3 times longer to get it done than it should.

Ok All done for the most part, I have a 15 inch wide strip to install over the door, But that's easy ,good thing is I took the lift back and they only charged me one day. I feel like I have been run over by a train.
Also installed my ceiling fan too, but forgot to get a pic.,.lol going to take a hot shower and hit the hay.Total time to knock it out was about 13 hours between getting a late start yesterday and getting the hard part done today. If It hadn't been for my impala being off the frame I would have gladly paid the 230 bucks to have it done.
