Had a guy out the other day to quote a job to do blown cellulose in my 24x32 garage since it would provide a higher R value than glass in my 2x4 walls.

Price qoute was $7800. :shocking:

WTF? Seems absolutely insane to me. I would have assume the qoute to be a 1/4 of that price based on what I read. Has anyone done this in their garage or house and wouldnt mind sharing what it cost?

I had my whole garage done (24x36) 2x6 walls, R30 in ceiling (all fiberglass batts) plus, they did the vapor barrier and caulked all seams and it only cost me $1,800

***** to live in NY!

I just quoted 1500SF of blown cellulose, R24 (attic, not wall).

I already did all the prep work (baffles, air sealing, barriers at kneewalls, etc. All I needed was for it to be blown in.

Prices were ALL $1200+, some $1500+, except for one company who only does insulation, and does a good job of it. $620.

YMMV, but I would keep shopping. For a job that big you may find a company willing to travel 60 miles or more. I probably called 20 places before finding the one. Which I later found out has a great reputation as well.

No need to have them out unless they sound good on price in the first place. Most places if you call them with your numbers and ask for a rough price will give it to you.

that's pretty darn high. I had a 2 story 24x36 done, including the attic and between the floors (which looked like a PIA having to first staple up mesh and blow that in) for $2,400.

Sounds like they didn't want to do the job and quoted you an outrageous price figuring you wouldn't take it but if you did, they would have done it and made out like bandits.

As others have said your quote seem really high.. This is why you should always get at least two or more quotes.

I just got an estimate for 40'x56'x12.5' closed cell spray foam for the walls alone and it was $3000.00 I'm mulling over having them come out and do a proper quote. At that price I'm thinking I'll have them do the ceiling as well.

That is a good price. I was quoted $10,000 for my 2 story 24x36 all in foam....to which I laughed.

Sounds like you could buy your own equipment and start insulation business yourself for a year and make big bucks!! Just do 2 insulation jobs a weekend, and by next spring, you could buy a new Camaro!!??#!

Are you in devastion area where Hurricane Sandy hit??

Price gouging is illegal in my books, but NY is expensive in general. Good luck.

Www.sprayfoamdirect.com will give you an idea on the materials cost. And those folks are making good money on those kits. The mark up is probably 100%.

I just got a quote for my 28 x 36 with R11 in walls and R19 in ceiling for less than $1200 installed. It's about $300 more for R19 in walls and R30 in ceiling. That is all with Kraft faced batts. Wall studs are 16 in OC.

I will drive from Indiana and do it for $3900 and I'll do the ceiling for free. LOL

Quotes are often higher in the winter, in my area the insulation companies have more work than they can complete. If they give out a few bids for big profits some of those will come back and make a nice winter profit for the company.

There is logic to the bid just not a fair one.

I had spray foam done in my detached garage for around 2k (22x30x8walls). Where in NY are you? That will make a big difference.

I paid $1.20/ sq ft for R50 cellulose blown in the attic of my garage. Total out the door was about $1200.

That price is in oil rich Alberta where everything costs more. . . $7800. . .are you SURE that wasn't for spray foam? That is just insane.

Assuming 10' walls, you have 1120 sq ft of R15 and 768 sq ft of R40 (maybe less) in the ceiling. . .

That is fully a spray foam price. Time to make some more phone calls.

I live about an hour north of NYC. He came to my house and measured, then called me the next day with the price. I was like "whaaat, ok bye" and hung up the phone.

I have two more companies coming by to quote this week. I dont mind waiting to summer and just maybe I will do that.
