I need some advice.
I am looking at 3 pieces of machinery, a 48" box & pan break, a 48" x 13" lathe & a 54" x 16G sheare. (Pics Included)
They look to be in good shape & the lathe comes with some tooling (not sure what exactly). All 3 are for sale from the same guy & I am looking for advice on my offer & a good buy price.

List prices on them new are (approximately) ...
Lathe - $5000
Sheare - $1600
Break - $800

This is a very large purchase for me & I want to be sure I get a good/fair deal, any advice with regards to "how to proceed" would be greatly appreciated.

Steve

It will be hard to give values based on the information provided. What are the manufacturers of the machines. I know as far as the lathe goes, the price highly depends on who the manufacturer is.

$5K for THAT lathe???? I'm calling BS on that.

Yea, not sure if I would pay $500 for that lathe. Looks to be lots of rust, and it is not a great lathe to begin with. Looks like a grizzly lathe.

The most valuable piece of equipment in there is the shear, which is still way overpriced. None of it looks to be in that great of condition. Which shows how the PO cared for his stuff. I would pass. :3gears:

Guys, the prices he posted are LIST (Retail new) prices, but I think also BS on the lathe... (I agree, looks Griz)

As said who makes them? If the shear or break are big names, better. if import...

Excuse me while I remove my foot from my mouth  Just another case of fingers faster than brain.

OP so is the guy asking you to make an offer? Has he given you any prices or just "make an offer"

If the lathe truly is a 13"x48" he may have paid around $5000 for it. I don't think that grizzly made lathes that long though. Most of the are 36" or 40" between centers. Which run between $3000 and $5000 new.

Lathe, I think he is dreaming, especially considering its condition. You can buy a much better used American machine for less than that.

Shear is a high, shears ain't cheap, I would probably pick it up for ~$500 (if I needed it) and what brand it is

Break is about the fairest price item he is trying to sell. IMHO

His price on the lathe is whacked, that"s a belt drive asian import, might be 13" swing, but real good chance it 12". Down here, around $1800-$2000 brand new. The lathes you linked to are gear heads, more expensive. The belt drive lathe is fine, have one just like it, an 80's vintage Jet, actually a pretty decent machine, not as good as my 16X54 Monarch, but does the job. In the condition shown, no quick change tool post, I'm thinking $800- $1000 at most.

I'd walk. That stuff is all imported asian stuff, and it's rusty. You can find better deals on older american made stuff that has been taken care of

I just talked with him (first time) It is a belt drive (good call 454ragtop) & it is a 48". It's about 7 years old & according to him hasn't seen very much use at all. It does come with a quick change tool post, a 3 & a 4 jaw chuck, a face plate & some other tooling.

I'm just throwing in as much info as I can, hoping that it will make it easier for any of you in the know to help me price it better. I asked him if he was willing to negotiant on price & he was. So I am planing on going to look at it tomorrow.

Oh ya, the break is sold, so I missed that.

I'm still hoping for more input, so keep it coming guys!

Break lathes come up all the time for $1500 for good ones. I just bought out an entire garage and ran it through auction. I had a break lathe and got $1800 and sold it to someone I knew who rebuilds airoplanes.

I have seen them for as little as $450 The one in your photo is old rust and has not been kept very sell. If it works without a lot of slop I might go $500 but not a penny more.

That's not a "brake" lathe, It's a regular bench metal lathe. Condition doesn't look THAT bad to me, suspect it will clean up fine.

Steve, not sure if he's calling that 4 way tool post a quick change, but it's not what I would call a quick change. I'm talking about an Aloris style with interchangable holders. I can't believe he has one and doesn't have it on the lathe, but who knows. Also not sure why he's calling it a 48", bed may be 48" in total length, but I suspect max distance between centers is 36" at most, which is the way lathes are typically specified today.

To me cut the asking prices in half and you are about there assuming good running condition

Wouldn't even bother with this guy- he thinks it's gold. I worry about someone who thinks he can palm off a lathe that looks like that for $3000. Check out Craig's List or Ebay for Grizzly lathes. Also check out Precision-Matthews, and other asian imports. You can and will do better than that. Also look at Monarch, Logan, and even Southbend used models. Remember that the tooling costs more than the lathe, so when you evaluate the deal, ask what tooling comes with it. Get as much tooling in the package as possible- it costs a lot more when bought separately.

Wow -

Lathe is worth $500

Box brake might be $500

shear might be worth $800

That's if they aren't complete ****.

Drive over to Detroit and look at craigslist. There's so much machinery for sale there at dirt cheap prices it will make your head spin.

I turned down a Warner Swazey #3 turret lathe with lots of tooling for $450 awhile back. I paid less than $1500 for my 52 inch hydraulic 16 gauge shear. I paid less than $3000 for a Monarch 10EE in rough, but working condition. You can buy a brand new Chinese made box and pan brake for $800.

Honestly, if youre still thinking about it at this point, I'd make the guy a $800 offer for the two left. If he says no I would look elsewhere. If all three were still there I wouldnt wanna be a penny over $1k.

I offered him $2000 total for both the lathe & the shear. He wasn't interested.
I'll find something else.

Thanks to everyone for your help.

Steve

He should have taken it. That was a generous offer from the photos I saw.

Can't really tell, but the shear and brake look like Chinese. I wouldn't pay more than 600 for the shear, and 500 for the brake. It looks like a 22 ga capacity. I'd try to get him down on the price, or look for a better deal.

-Just as an aside, that's a whole 'nother animal from a 10-14" "hobby" sized lathe. Lots of demand for home-shop sized lathes, virtually none at all for older manual turret lathes, let alone a 2 to 2-1/2 ton monster like that. I've seen 'em parted & scrapped because they couldn't be given away- they're generally too specialized for home-shop/hobbyist use.

Really, that Grizzly, in most areas, if actually only a relative few years old as said to be, should be worth somewhere in the $1,500 ballpark. On the East Coast, maybe closer to $800, but that's a machine-rich area. In the Southwest, or better yet, up here in Alaska, it'd be worth closer to $2,000. Just a couple days ago, a mid-70s Taiwanese import 12x42" lathe in worse condition (similar rust and a literal inch of combined sawdust/drywall dust covered most of the bed) was posted to Craigslist for $800 and the seller had cash in hand in less than two hours.

But yeah, $2K was a more than fair offer. The guy'll sit on it for a while.

Doc.
