I am lucky to have local steel suppliers that will deal with small guys. They take my credit card.

My old supplier would cut me 4 feet of something if that is what I needed. My new supplier requires me to buy entire lengths. (I moved).

I pretty much only go online for specialty items, such as alloy steel, not for mild steel.

I generally pay around $1 US a pound for full lengths.

Was just about to suggest Fazzio as mentioned above. They are local to me here in South Jersey, about a 20 min drive. Great place with good pricing.

Have you tried a local welding shop? If it is small stuff I used to give it away. If you need larger quantities they can order it. I used to get four steel trucks a week.

MetalsDepot.com is usually fairly accurate with what I pay locally.

I've been hearing horror stories about prices right now, may want to hit a scrap yard if you need common items, might get a better deal.

I just bought some flat angle yesterday, hot rolled $1.23lb. I just figure out what I need for the job, look up the weights, then call and get per lb. price. Our local salvage yard quit selling used thank goodness. It was a lot cheaper, but now cheap assed me has to work with new iron.

They wont give you a price because its so volatile right now. Prices have doubled on rebar recently. Is this a large diy project that requires a lot of steel? If its just a couple of pieces prices are what they are, and shouldn't make that much difference. Most suppliers sell steel by the truck load. A local steel shop may be a good alternative, but the ones local to me are usually staffed with a different kind of person. Hard to get someone to talk to you unless you want a lot of work done. Good Luck.

I called local steel suppliers in my area. They told me where their catalog was and I sent the rep an email with what I wanted. He responded back with an itemized quote on their letter head I could take down and place my order within a couple weeks before it expired. For small 3" and less material I think it was like $1.25/lb.

The junk/scrap yards will give you a price per lb value. My local one has a covered area with everything you would want on a rack. Last time I called it was like $0.75/lb.

Let us know you area and people on here will let you know the best places around you. At least that's how I found my suppliers.

I bought some aluminum sheet from Metal Supermarket. They gave me a price over the phone so I had a baseline to work off off.

Once I go there, one piece was wrong, not right size or just a bit long, they gave me a slight discount on the price so they didn't have to shear it.

Ask the suppliers about remnants and cutoffs. I bought a bunch of 1" x .125" angle in 3-5 foot lengths that had been cut off from other customer orders and they took about 20% off what it would normally cost per pound, most larger customers have no interest in stuff like that.

I swing into a small, local steel yard. If the counterman that I do the best with, isn't there, I just leave and go back on the next day. Since I always deal with the same guy, he takes great pains to find me "cut offs" or "drops", which he charges almost nothing for. About every third, or fourth time to go in, I take a box of donuts, which I leave on the counter.

Pretty much, everyone wins.

How much steel?

Local really is the way to go. Place I go to delivers once a week up here ( 100 miles away) but I usually order full sticks of stuff.

Our local places used to say 7 days on a quote now it's 24 hours.

myalro.com is the online website of Alro, a major steel supplier in the US. If you can get an idea of markup for your nearest supplier, Nucor also has their price sheet online.

Discountsteel.com as mentioned above has a decent site and has prices listed. They usually ended up being a touch higher online than in person (Fort Worth) but it gave me a good idea of what to expect.

Gas prices are usually pretty indicative of steel, if gas is up, so is steel.

To just get a rough guess, you could check dmsteel.com. They're a local steel place to Des Moines, and their website has the same pricing as in-person. Plus, you can order online and pick up in person, which is REALLY nice.

Alro is based where i live, and they DO NOT have the best prices around here. My opinion, yours may vary. Check with surplus yards. Deals are out there.

If they bought at high price, they're not going to lose money selling it for less or they are waiting on it to go back up.

New 20% tariff on imports has driven price up

another tariff, thought that other one has expired... ? man this is not going to be good.... last year or two ago I got 24' 1/16 2x2 wall (not HSST) for about $75 a piece... I am afraid of even going to the local supplier and ask... you think I can wait it out ?

Just bought 545 lbs of varying stock for $585. Now this is from a machine shop who is a customer of our business, so that's pretty much his cost. But it shows that steel should be in the $1.10 - $1.25 range. See if you can find a local fab shop that might sell drops or order material for you on their next order.

The Trump tariffs have all been delayed till June and the biggest foreign steel suppliers have been exempted. Obviously no supplier will give you a long term price commitment, but if you are getting high price quotes for an immediate purchase someone is trying to turn a headline into a quick buck. Your remedy is to shop elsewhere.
