Not exactly garage related, but anyone from the midwest, specifically SE Michigan, have a privacy fence installed recently? I'm curious on cost, I plan to get a few estimates, but am wondering what ballpark I can expect.

NW Indiana, got a few quotes two years ago for 6ft pvc fence between $35-40/ft (less for thinner plastic, longer post spacing, etc.)

If you go with pressure treated, expect it to last about 12-15 years. Around my area, it's about $30/foot installed. Actual material cost is about $10/ft.

PVC, there are so many different brands to even look at. Personally, since I've installed a lot of fences, Tuf-Fence, is THE best vinyl fence I have found. Looks nice, and is SOLID in comparison to a lot of the **** that's out there. Ease of putting it together and taking it apart is what I find makes it stand out from the rest.
This stuff is around $50/ft NOT installed, but worth every penny.

Make sure you ask which product they are quoting you on, as it makes a huge difference.

Price will depending greatly on the material (PT, cedar, vinyl, etc) and the linear feet

I had vinyl before and also PT.........my current house has cedar, which I like the best

I would never get vinyl again

I had a fence I built myself from Cypress. At the time it was the same price as PT. If you keep the termites away from cypress it will easily outlast PT.

I installed my own 5' PT wood fence over 30 years ago. It is till holding up well.

Do NOT use those crappy pre-made fence panels. The boards on them are only about 1/2" thick, where a standard 1" board is 3/4" thick. I bought 10' board, cut them in half and then cut the dog ears.

My son's all cedar fence lasted about 20 years. One section is still standing (close to 30 now), but we have replaced 3 or 4 of the 4x4 6' cedar posts with PT.

If you are going to go vinyl/PVC, pay extra and get aluminum reinforcement for the corner and both sides of each gate.

Did one last year. About 180' total length. PostMaster steel posts, 6' high pressure treated privacy fence. Was right about 3K. We demo'd the old fence and left the old concrete + remainder of rotten cedar posts in the ground. Total they only had to dig out 2 posts on corners at the property line, all others were just located in different spots from the originals.

It was hand built from pieces, no prefab panels. The guy we used is absolutely First Class. I don't usually hire anyone to do work, so it had to be someone we could trust. He weeded through 2 Home Depots to find good enough pickets for us rather than buy a lot of whatever and put it up. Meticulous work on the level and location of the posts too. Most of our friends in the neighborhood have used his services too.

It was very close to the same price for me to build as it was for him to do it, so we let him do it.

Not the same area but the company is Fence Factory Family in Crystal Lake Il. Tommy is the owner and a great guy. Does the actual work himself too.

Thanks for the company info. My parents live in Streamwood and will be looking to replace their fence in next few years.

If you're going with pressure treated, use 6x6 for posts. It's not that you need them that thick when they're new. But when they're 10+ years old and 1" is rotted around the perimeter at ground level, they aren't ready to break. I had to replace a mostly good PT fence because 8 of 9 posts were broken at ground level.

Another Dave in Metro Detroit with a 3rd gen F-body? What are the odds?

I'm hoping to do this same thing in the next couple of years. Home had cedar when we moved in , but had to take it down to build the 2nd garage. It was pretty tired anyway.

Only place I've really looked is local. If you're shopping around, you might want to give them a call.

My Pleasure Slupie. Tommy is great and I trust him, so I like recommending his work. Hope it works out for you! Sometimes a little hard to get a hold of because he is quite busy. Keep calling and he will get back to you.

$48 CDN per foot, 6.5ft high cedar with 6x6 PT posts and PT horizontal 2x6's here FWIW for my American friends. May be helpful for my Canuck compatriots.
