Funny you mention them, I was in Princess Auto Saturday and saw the Pro Point stuff. I thought they were lower quality than the Powerfist line although I am not sure anything could be that low!:lol_hitti The different coloured ratchets and breaker bars were enough for me...the few tools I did look at seemed very cheaply made.

I don't get to Princess Auto often, the closest one is about an hour away, but the few times I have been up that way I have to make a stop there....that store is like an accident...you just have to look.:)

I have a PA a couple of km's from the house.

I haven't purchased any Pro-Point tools yet but the ones I've looked at IMHO were better finished than the regular PA stock it replaces. Much of what I've looked at were Taiwan-made. I don't recall if the old stock was ROC or Taiwan.

They don't seem to have sale prices on the Pro-Point stuff yet (not in Regina). There are a couple of items I'd like, just waiting for a sale.

I've looked at them, handled them but I just can't seem to bring any of them to the cash register and pay for them. Not sure why. I mean, they SEEM like decent quality tools, along the same lines as some of the newer Mastercraft stuff but with the crappy experiences I've had with most of the few tools I've bought there, I just put them back on the shelf, pick up my regular consumables and oddball items from the surplus section and head on out. I do want to pick up one of their composite handled ratchets and put it through it's paces but I think I wait till they're on sale.

It's probably all **** just not as steaming as the powerfist pile. However I did buy a set of the billet aluminum socket rails. They are nice but expensive.

I know that Gray tools and the Propoint hammers are the same.

I bought a set of Gray ball peens being assured they were made in Canada, only to see the exact same hammer labeled "ProPoint" at Princess Auto. I was one pissed off customer when I went back to the shop that sold me the Gray hammers.

Interesting you say that. I saw some stainless steel Gray wrenches then saw some Pro-point that looked the same:headscrat

Like most places, if you're selective you can do well looking at the Pro-Point stuff - some items look really good, others look gimmicky. Some of the better PowerFist branded stuff also appear to have been changed to Pro-Point branding.

I purchased the thin profile dual flex head ratchet in 1/4in and 3/4 in drive, it is 72 teeth an identical to a ratchet posted by another member purchased at a U.S. store - so far it is working without any problems.

I also have the following items purchased from PA a considerable time ago they have all held up well after a lot of use:

  • 1/4 inch long handled ratchet
  • 1/4 inch flex ratchet
  • 1/2 in drive metric and SAE shallow and deep impact sockets purchased in 1995
  • 3/8 in drive metric and SAE shallow and deep impact sockets purchased in 1995
  • 3/8 drive SAE shallow flex sockets purchasd in 1995
  • 150inlb 3/8 drive click torque wrench purchased in 1997 - I get my calibration lab to check it once every year and it is still good
  • 3/8 drive impact gun purchased in 1995
  • air die grinder purchased in 1996
  • air cut off tool purchased in 1997
air chisel purchased in 1996 - used to break up concrete, cut steel, knock out bushings etc
  • electric die grinder purchased in 2004, the first one lasted 3 hours this one has survived heavy use.
  • 3/4 inch drive metric socket set purchased in 1998 mainly used to press bearings etc and remove axle nuts
  • 3/4 inch SAE impact sockets

I have found some stuff is junk but there are good items among their tools.

My tool boxes contain a pot pourri of: snap On, MAC, Proto, Gray, Williams, Armstrong, Cornwall, Britool, Gordon, Sykes Pickvant, Hilka, KAMASA, NEW Britain, Herbrand, Craftsman, Channellock, Mastercraft Professional, Kobalt, Gearwrench, Titan, Vise Grip, Mole, Cluthe, MATCO, NONE BETTER, Ultrapro, Taskmaster, Eclipse and Huskey - I probably missed some manufacturers. I use tools every day for something or other although I do not use them at work. All of my tools have to pay for their keep.

I have inherited some of my dad's tools and he was a hard tool user repairing heavy trucks, some were my grandfathers - both of whom used tools in their jobs repairing and building railway freight cars.

The PA multimeters are junk, as are some wrenches, screwdivers etc. but good items do exist as always choose carefully. Other than the Electric die Grinder I have not needed to warranty anything - the problem with PA (and a number of other retailers) is discontinue items and there is no equivalent quality item if you do need it. At lest PA advertsie a no questions asked warranty.

Maaybe we should sart a PA Pass/Fail thread

Fellow Canucks, I see that Princess Auto has a new line of tools out that seem to be a little better than the Power Fist line they were carrying.

Has anyone tried any of the new Pro-Point tools? Any good ones, ones to stay away from?

I purchased the 18v cordless drill with dual battery pack and charger about 10 months ago. The drill has lots of oomph, and the 18v Li-ion batteries hold the charge, not bad, but not quite long enough. It seems though that additional batteries are no longer available, and to get an additional set of batteries I may have to buy another tool. Do I really want to do that? I would prefer to see them put the batteries back in the store - NOT JUST ONLINE. The drill is very light weight, has lot of torque, and very comfortable to use. If I could find another couple of batteries I would be quite happy. Does any-one have any leads? I've been searching the WEB (and Princess Auto on line) with no luck so far.

I stock my wheeling rig with PA tools because they are cheap and I don't care if I happen to lose one on the trail. I've not tried the new Pro-point but some looks decent quality for sure.

Quick note here...if you see something "Made in ROC," that is Taiwan. They call themselves the Republic of China. The big mainland China is PROC...People's Republic of China.

I was into our local Princess Auto this morning and noticed that the Pro-Point circular metal saw is being cleared out. I've used mine many times and it has worked flawlessly (see post #14 above).

They are on sale now for $82. The original price was $240. I have seen them on sale for $150 several times and that is what I paid for mine. At $82 this is a very good deal.

Bought a ProPoint dry cut metal saw at PA after much research on line. Turns out it is very similar to the Morse unit that some people recommended which is also made off shore. Morse does not seem to be available in Canada but I managed to get the Morse V Block jaws on Amazon. Bolt right on and almost essential for perfect cuts on round or square stock.
So far over a 100 cuts with stock blade and no issues. Cuts are square with only the chips to contend with. Suitable for my needs.
