Hello All,
I'm new here but I figured I would share my issue and resolution that may help someone someday.
So since it got cold in the Denver, CO area my old Genie screw drive IS550/A garage door opener stopped working. Mfg date 2002. There is a multitude of things to check for when looking over troubleshooting tips found on the internet. re: Sensors, Screw drive lubrication and screw drive coupler .
After checking all these including swapping out the starting capacitor $22 finally solved the issue when I pulled the head unit off the ceiling.
I had removed the entire screw drive so effectively zero load on the motor but the symptoms continued. The motor would turn maybe 2 revolutions and then bind and buzz the 1st time after a button push. If I tried again immediately it wouldn't turn at all and just buzz. If I manually turned the shaft by hand and tried it again it would turn again for about 2 revolutions and bind/buzz. When I manually turned the motor shaft it was not binding.
There was no shaft play end to end or side to side. So i figured maybe a bad starting capacitor. Nope that didnt fix it. Assuming a bad motor somehow I finally pulled the head unit off the garage ceiling.
After getting it down on the bench I found that the 4 motor chassis mounting screws going through the windings and motor housing were also the screws that held the motor to the inside of the front plate of the entire garage door unit housing. By loosening them and re tightening them I was able to get the motor shaft to be held correctly through the windings and get the motor to run without it binding.
Would have been a 0 cost repair if i had realized the issue before purchasing the starting capacitor......
Bad design but glad it will still do the job now and I don't need to buy a new one.
