Hello All,
I'm new here but I figured I would share my issue and resolution that may help someone someday.

So since it got cold in the Denver, CO area my old Genie screw drive IS550/A garage door opener stopped working. Mfg date 2002. There is a multitude of things to check for when looking over troubleshooting tips found on the internet. re: Sensors, Screw drive lubrication and screw drive coupler .

After checking all these including swapping out the starting capacitor $22 finally solved the issue when I pulled the head unit off the ceiling.

I had removed the entire screw drive so effectively zero load on the motor but the symptoms continued. The motor would turn maybe 2 revolutions and then bind and buzz the 1st time after a button push. If I tried again immediately it wouldn't turn at all and just buzz. If I manually turned the shaft by hand and tried it again it would turn again for about 2 revolutions and bind/buzz. When I manually turned the motor shaft it was not binding.

There was no shaft play end to end or side to side. So i figured maybe a bad starting capacitor. Nope that didnt fix it. Assuming a bad motor somehow I finally pulled the head unit off the garage ceiling.

After getting it down on the bench I found that the 4 motor chassis mounting screws going through the windings and motor housing were also the screws that held the motor to the inside of the front plate of the entire garage door unit housing. By loosening them and re tightening them I was able to get the motor shaft to be held correctly through the windings and get the motor to run without it binding.

Would have been a 0 cost repair if i had realized the issue before purchasing the starting capacitor......

Bad design but glad it will still do the job now and I don't need to buy a new one.

I'm puzzled how the mounting screws "moved" over time. Where they loose such that the shaft/winding could move?

They were tight but not real tight (loosend easily with hex nut driver). I am thinking that the housing slightly shifted on the bolts.. The 4 bolts are about 10 inches long. I could still rotate the shaft freely before I loosend them but there was a squeek. I just loosend them all and re-tightened them. Rotated the shaft, the squeak was gone. Plugged it back in and shorted the push button terminals and ran great, not binding anymore.

Only a month late, but I've been dealing with this issue for a couple of weeks now.

I tested the original capacitor from 1993, and it was within specification. I bought a replacement off Amazon just to be safe, but after installing the new capacitor, I experienced similar issues. Eventually, after enough button mashing, the unit started to operate normally.

I caught COVID shortly after, and to keep myself busy, I purchased a capacitor straight from Genie along with a new cartridge/trolley assembly, which quieted things down a lot! After installing them, it worked well until yesterday.

Yesterday, I couldn't get the garage door opener to run at all without encountering the humming. Even with the garage door disconnected, the unit wouldn't budge. I loosened all four mounting screws (which were somewhat loose to start with) and tightened them up. It sounds like a totally different opener now.

Worth a shot if anyone is encountering these issues.

I have found Geni Tech Support to be very helpful. They have talked me through several problems over the years.
