In the OP you said another AFCI breaker was tried with the same results. This means 2 defective breakers if he put yet another AFCI breaker in (as stated in post 37) and it didnt trip

As for the electrician, he is working for me as a favor, since he has a job with an electrical contractor who doesn't always have work for him..... but everyone has to learn every day on the job. I don't know anyone who starts off as an expert on day one....

Sure everyone has to learn but who is monitoring and supervising his work here? who is checking his wiring practices? someone who is learning should be watched by a journeyman or foreman who is working under a licensed/insured contractor. neither you nor the inspector qualifies for this position. what happens if something goes wrong? who's insurance is covering the mess?

OP got a good deal and obviously he doesn’t care about the safety of his family……… Nothing new here because he "saved money" and what seems like a great deal can come back to bite him in the *** when things go sideways.
When I was a licensed contractor I despised these "trunk slammers" who took work away from licensed pros who paid insurance, served their time to obtain a license, paid for tools and vehicles only to be undercut by a rookie with no credentials.
OP has been "educated" and it is up to him to deal with this potentially hazardous situation.…… I am out!

My mistake. It is a renovation with everything being brought up to current codes. In CT, the homeowner can pull all permits, which is what I have done. I am allowed to hire help in all the trades. I did the same 40 years ago when I built our present home. The building inspector is tough; he looks at everything and requires pictures or a reinspection if he requests something be done that hasn't been addressed on the first inspection. For example, he requires pressure testing of all gas, sewer, and plumbing work before he will pass it.

So you put yourself down as the electrical contractor (which you can do) then you hired a UNLICENSED newb to do this work……… That is a false and misleading statement that can get you in trouble with big penalties along with the unlicensed newb being fined for doing electrical work without a license or business permit.
Be happy you were not in my jurisdiction (before I retired) because both of you would be in trouble……. I know you would want me to "overlook" this situation but if I did I would be part of the crime and lose my inspector license and pension.
READ all the fine print on those technical sections about false and misleading statements then you will see what I mean……… These are legal documents and taken very seriously.

TIP! I suggest UPDATING your electrical permit and get your name off as the contractor BEFORE this whole "cluster F" turns into a **** sandwich that you will have to eat……… Go to the building department "confessional" and make things right.
