I am considering using 4ft 6-bulb fixtures in my garage. Saw these at HD and looked really bright http://www.homedepot.com/p/t/202193185?catalogId=10053&langId=-1&storeId=10051&N=5yc1vZ25ecodZbvmb&R=202193185#.UR1MMx03vIc I called Lithonia and they said there would be dark spots since the light would not have time to fan out due to reflector geometry. I had called another commercial distributor about using a similar fixture and they said it would be no problem, just very bright. My eyes are getting older, so I welcome the brightness. Does anyone have experience with this type of setup? I was thinking of these fixtures due to 4" height, less fixtures needed, and I figured I would put in 5k bulbs.

Too bright for the height...period. T5 is made for highbay applications. Go with T8 32w in the 5100K and you'll be happy. My ceiling height is 10'. I use 8' 4 tube fixtures spaced end-to-end over a 22' length and repeat this approximately every 4' over 36'. These are wired to six switches allowing my to illuminate just the area I need. It's like daylight in the dark of night. Oh, and my eyesight is really sucking these days too.

Position the lights so they are not directly over your lift, as it will reduce the height you can lift the car. And don't forget to allow enough height so you can lift the lift off the blocks and release the saftey.

In my case, I would have an additional 6" if the lights were not in the wrong places!

The lights the OP linked to are T8's. The reflectors are made for highbay.

Beat me to it. Indeed, if you follow the link the OP posted, the I-Beam lights linked to are T8 lamps (they do make T5HO in this fixture, but these are not).

Lithonia is most likely correct, the reflectors are designed to focus the light in a more downward pattern. It will spread out, if the fixture is 20 ft up, but at about 5 ft from light to working height, the cone of light will be narrow, and create dark spots between the fixtures.

That I can tell, Lithonia no longer has a IB 632 MVH fixture on their web site. All of their I beam lights are now designated IBZ and there is no IBZ 632 MVH listed. IBZ fixtures are flat on top, the ballast is recessed in between the middle bulbs. The fixture most closely resembling the one in the HD picture is a FGB series, with a hump on top for the ballast. There are versions of the IBZ made for wide distribution of light, but still, 8 ft is probably too low for them. The easiest way to spot the different type of light distribution in Lithonia fixtures is that the ones with the highly polished aluminum reflector are the Narrow Distribution, focused light design, while the ones with the white reflector is the Wide Distribution. The slots above the bulbs provide for uplighting, and some fixtures are available without this.

I'm wondering if the ones HD has are an obsolete version of the I beam lights, the original version, which is, coincidentally, what all of their stores are equipped with.

Go TO THIS LINK and click the "open" folder in the upper left. Then select "lithonia" from the menu. Then select "fluorescent and LED high bay". Then select "general purpose". Then select the light shown as IB, which is third row down, far left. Then use the scroll bar on the far left as needed to move the list. there are four different 6 bulb T8 fixtures listed, the IB632, the IB632NDS, the IB632WD, and the 632WDS. None of these are the MVH listed on the HD website. DOUBLE CLICK on the particular model you want to view the specs on for the full specs and light distribution graphs. A single click will give you a preview. On the far right you can select the PDF to display and print this.information in a user friendly format.

At the top of the screen you can select "interior" and plug in the dimensions and import the data from the light specs for the light you have selected and get a feel for what the lighting will do for you.

You can add different types of light fixtures by selecting the green plus sign and selecting from the main menu the light you desire to use, then it will recalculate. You can switch between the first and second and so forth as you add lights. I have twelve 400 watt MH lights in a 60x60 at about 15 ft and it shows I need 9, so I am over lit it appears.

ND is narrow distribution
WD is wide distribution
The S indicates vent slots/uplighting

Very late EDIT: the MVH stands for Multi Voltage and I think the H stands for High bay

T5HO is not specifically intended for high bay. Like any lighting, you have to select the proper fixture. I have open T5HO strips over my workbench at about 7 ft and am quite happy with them. With a focused High Bay fixture, they would be horrible. Its all in the fixture you select.

In that case, would you know of any 6 bulb low bay fixtures? Or should I not bother and just get more of the 4 bulb units?

That was an excellent post Charles. Thank you for "shedding some light" pun intended, on the subject of different high bay fixtures.

I haven't mounted them yet but I recently purchased six (thinking I really need nine) of the IBZ 654 which are narrow beam high bay fixtures and I'm thinking I should take them back and trade them in for the WD version's.

I'm going to try the "interior" option and see what I come up with.

"Holy smokes" That's almost more than I really wanted to know !! Awesome !!

I just bought seven of those fixtures for my 20x30' garage, and as soon as I'm done painting up they go.
I have a nine and a half foot ceiling height and I'm going to screw them directly to it (hanging from chains just won't work for me).
I hung one from the rafters just to see how much light it would give and dang was it bright!
It was too much with the six "daylight" tubes in it, so I swapped out three of them with a warmer color and that made it just perfect.

I'm really happy with the way the lighting turned out.

Well, I've tried to load a couple photos...then just one photo, but it keeps saying upload failed.
I'm clicking on "manage attachments" then selecting the photos from my "pictures" file on my windows computer. It works on other forums I belong to, not sure why it's not working here.

Mike, I have four of those mounted in my 2 car attached garage. They work just fine and are plenty bright.

7 in a 20x30?

I bet that lights it up pretty well! I was thinking 4 in a 24x24. Maybe I should do 6.. ;)
