Hi,
I've got two, mutually antagonistic problems:

1. I love to acquire and use tools from many different disciplines.

2. I am chronically disorganized and have a real problem categorizing things.

If you are a hoarder or just chronically disorganized in your home there are many thousands of people and services that will help you organize your papers and your household belongings, your kitchen, etc.-- but I have NEVER seen any of these types of services available specifically for active maker-friendly garage situations.

I assume they are out there, I just haven't found any yet. Do you guys have any suggestions?

Wives always want to reorganize stuff. But rarely the way we like it.

Start spending some hours reading the Gallery Section. Hopefully, that will motivate you to get organized and help you out.

Best use of time and energy is to buy cabinets. Vidmars or Listas, despite their high price, eat up a *ton* of stuff. Honorable mention for other metal drawer cabinets, or repurposed kitchen cabinets.

I bought an old school Dymo embossing labeler, it sits right out in the shop, I don't have to run back inside to borrow the other one, and its never out of batteries :) Very helpful as far as putting labels on things.

Then all you have to do is stick with "like items together". There can be some variability, meaning does teflon tape go with pipe-related items or with other rolls of Tape. I choose piping items every time, but its just a simple illustration.

Just pick a area and get started, a bite at a time. You don't need somebody telling you how to arrange your shop.

Are you my wife pretending to be me??? Did a double take to make sure I wasn't journaling during my sleep last night. I've tried several times but have been unsuccessful so far. My problem is too many tools and not enough space or budget to expand. I am however halfway through cutting my own beams with a chainsaw mill attachment. I plan to build a timber frame shed with double enclosed lean too's on each side similar to what you see in front of Home Depot. I plan on putting my bigger less expensive yard work type stuff out there as well as materials storage rack for wood and metal.

I've mounted a 10 drawer freebie toolbox and 3 metal cabinets I got free inside of my enclosed trailer and the track systems for hanging stuff on the walls. I plan on parking it under the shed and using it as an outdoor workshop on days cool enough and if not it will just store everything. My hopes are that it gets the clutter down enough so that I can get on top of it and turn the clutter back into all the useful stuff it really is.

I just finished up a year long service project so now my free time focus is going to be on this. I hope to have it done by the end of summer so I can get organized enough to start a room enclosure before our shocking surprise arrives in November. I will post a thread when I get to the dirt pad.
