Hi to all.
I have just purchased a russian made Profila 1K62 lathe. Center height 8", bed length around 60 ". It was a bit bigger than what I was looking for, but in very good condition and I was able to try it out at the sellers place. Great machine, lovely gearboxes, feed/thread system and looks very very well made.
Being me, there is no way NOT to strip it and go thru every single part and refurbish what may be worn. And it will be painted a nice yellow, my fav shop color. Sloppy cleaning is very obvious!

Does anybody have any experience from this or similar russioan made machines?

Pics will follow in two weeks.

Best regards

Ola

We have now bought this lathe and are really happy, it is an excellent, albeit Heavy Duty, machine. 200 mm swing above bed, 1200 mm length.
Great functions overall, the feed gearbox is a marvel. From 0,07 mm/turn to 130 mm/turn in around 75 increments. And threading of all standards except som archaic bicyle threads from 1902.

Offloaded and transported into the buildung at -18 Centigrade, which makes for fast work with no beer intermissions.
Weight is 2300 kg, spindle speeds 12-2000 rpm. Built 1971, used as a toolroom lathe at a large maritime shop and been sleeping the last 20 years. We have testrun all functions.

The restoration begins! Will be painted bright yellow.

Best regards

Ola

The lathe stood outdoors at minus 18 C for 3 days, so after we got it in it took 24 hours to come to room temp.

Have oiled it up and removed all visible condensation, blown out all tight sliding surfaces. Started it up and polished the back circumference of the chuck with diamond powder and a beach stick. Got a totally smooth surface. Put a 1/100 mm dial gauge on and measured runout at 12 rpm. Less than 1/100 mm, which is really good for a 45 yo lathe. Then I meaured the radial play in the spindle nose bearing and it was non existent!.
I will get a mikrokator with a resolution of 1/1000 mm and recheck, spindle play at 20 C oil and ambient temp need to be 2-4/1000 mm.
Easy to adjust.

So we are happay as clams. Around US$ 1500 for a first class lathe. And nobody will steal it, weight is 2400 kilos!

The strip down has started, all parts will be cleaned, refinished and adjusted
The final touch will be painting it canary yellow.

Best regards

Blasphemy?
Since I am an avowed nonbeliever in ALL religions, sects, whatever, no worry!

And there is a reason for the yellow. 45 years ago I worked in an industrial instrumentation workshop. Everything from fancy electronics to precision miniature mechanical stuff. And we serviced and repaired all.To get up to speed on the mechanical side , a Certified Master Watchmaker was hired. Amazing guy. One of his first tasks was to organize the machines. Which he did, at the same time as adjusting everything, replace damaged bits and install a dust/vapor/chip collection system.
And then he had all machines painted canary yellow. His inaugural speech was short and to the point.
" After you have used a machine make sure that it is clean and canary yellow, all over" Lesson for life from a true professional.

After we got the lathe in to the shop, the partial teardown has started. First to come off was the 10,2 kW main drive motor. Wonderfully designed support. And all parts are heavy! The motor weighed in at 125 kilos.
Opened the gearbox/spindle support. 16 spindle speeds from 12 to 2000 rpm and selectors for threading drive, fine and coarse. 72 pitches in all.
The gearbox has an oilbath multidisc clutch and an oil pump for internal lube.
Quite a nice design.
Also, who needs a gym? Work on a russian lathe instead.

Best regards

I have been busy for two months cleaning, adjusting , and preparing for paint of a large amount of parts that we removed from the lathe. No bad surprises but to reassemble the very intricate feed gearbox was not easy.
Have started to install parts that will not be in the way when we are going to steamclean the bed, legs and spindle gearbox outside, in prep for painting.
And I was voted down for painting it Canary Yellow. Both coowners said NO WAY. So it will be Soviet bluegrey.

Best regards

Ola
