Hi,

Bought a ProFusion EH 4604 heater from Northern Tools. The reviews were good on their site and found a few positive comments on this forum.

http://www.northerntool.com/shop/tools/product_200578579_200578579

Anyway, I already had a 240V 30 amp 4-prong receptacle in my garage so I wired the heater using a matching 30 amp dryer cable, I just did not use the red wire.

When I plug the heater in the fan runs very slow, regardless of wattage setting. Any thoughts?

Thanks,
Rick

I purchased 2 of these also. I have not hooked mine up yet though. I will let you know when I do if no one else answers.

Okay, I believe what I am doing wrong is the way I wired it. As stated, I have a 4-prong receptacle but the heater only accommodates 3 wires (2 lines & 1 ground). That said, I believe the right way to do this is:

1. Black wire to line 1
2. Red wire to line 2
3. Ground to ground
4. Neutral not connected, wrapped & tied

Is this correct & are there any safety concerns?

Thanks,
Rick

You got it right the second time. In the previous situation the heater was only getting 120V line to neutral. Black and red to L1 and L2, ground to the ground screw and the unused neutral should be capped.

Not sure of the code implications of wiring a cable/plug assembly to a heater designed to be permanently installed however.

Thanks Diesel, I'm not sure either but can't see how it can be harmful, in my mind that's exactly how it would have ended up had I hard-wired it. The plug, receptacle & circuit all meet the heater's 240V/30A requirements.

I also just purchased this heater from Northern on Black Friday. I am impressed with the build quality for the price. I have it hard wired as you state in your second post, #s 1,2 and 3. Works very well. The fan doesn't blow you away but is adequate. I'm happy with it.
P.S. Thanks again Yb for the heads up on the sale...

David,

I may be taking mine back for an exchange, works fine but the fan is noisy, sounds like it's hitting something. Any noise issues with yours?

Thanks,
Rick

Good morning Rick,
You can hear the heater running, but is not too loud at all. Certainly not like the fan is hitting something. My heater was shipped as the nearest Northern Tool is hundreds of miles away. If I had one nearby I would return it. If mine was making the noise you describe I might be tempted to open it up and see what the problem was. Good luck. When you get it sorted out I'm sure you'll be happy.

Getting closer, they are mounted now and the wiring supplies have been purchased. I'll update later one they are heating the garage. Of course it was 70 here yesterday now...

Rick and Kevin,
Looks and sounds good. Here is the end product of my install. Like I said I'm sure you'll be happy with the end results.

I just installed this heater yesterday.

When it first fired up, I was sure that the bearings were shot - it was noisy as heck - it had a harmonic 'clink' as it wound down.

Having no chance to return it (I live six hours from the nearest store) I turned off the power, disconnected it, and took the back off. I realized that the fan was held on by a single nut and the nut wasn't tightened at all. It was loose enough that I could turn it with my hands, which was causing the problem.

I took the back fan cover off, and then two bolts holding on the fan assembly. I was careful not to pinch or damage the wire, and tilted it so I could tighten the nut - a dab of blue locktite ensured that it wouldn't come loose again. I'm glad I used gloves, as that stamped fan was very sharp (and very thin).

All is well now - mine is quiet and working well now! (If I lived anywhere close to the store, I would have returned it instead of taking it apart. I think they must have had an entire run of these with loose nuts, as there were no bad reviews when I bought it, but I'm reading a lot about it now).

Alcon:

Yesterday morning was in the 30s here and the first real test. I have to say it works okay not great. My garage is a standard 4 car with sheet rock walls and no insulation. I had to leave the heater on for over 2 hours to take the edge off the cold (I had it aimed at the first 2-bay area)...I would not call it warm. I'm going to keep it but may try to find a way to make it mobile (longer cord) so I can set it up closer to areas where I plan to work. All in all, a good deal for $79 but don't expect miracles.

You need 10/2 wire for the heater and 30amp circuit.. that being said I installed mine 2 weeks ago and was working fine (quiet and kept the garage comfortable) Standard 3 car attached garage. Yesterday fan was running and no heat!! called customer service and they instructed me to take it back to the store of purchase... It is either the switch for for the wattage or the heating element.. I will be pulling it down tonight and exchanging it for another one.. If its the three position switch I would've just hard wired around it because I want it to only run at 5000 watts anyway.

Finally finished my heater install this weekend. It's not the prettiest and I still need to clean up the wiring in the control box a little, but it is all working. I can now control my 2 heaters with my Honeywell wifi thermostat!
