We'll be in our house four years this summer and though we have a decent sized attached garage, it's never had a car in it the whole time we've lived here
Between the lawn tractor, snow blower, generator, push mower, log splitter, and all kinds of other yard equipment that I needed to store indoors there was never room for a car. I finally got a small shed built to house all of that stuff so now I can focus on getting the garage organized. The footprint is 11' x 22' but the ceiling is 11' high because they kept the full roof height with the dropped slab so there's a lot of potential for loft space:
I'm planning on doing a loft that extends 10' out from the rear wall with about 3' 6" of head room up top:
That will allow me to store seasonal stuff (hunting gear, Christmas decorations, clothing, camping stuff, etc...) in an easy to reach location rather than having some in the attic and some stuffed away in the basement. Underneath the loft will be the "tool crib" where all of my automotive/mechanics tools will go. I'm also trying to come up with some way to make the scuttle hole for the attic easier to access without sacrificing room for a vehicle. Prior to this I had an aluminum extension ladder propped there because it was the only way to get to it since its 11' up. As you can see from the pics there's also quite a bit of room above the garage door-there is a jury-rigged shelf above it now but I'd like to do another smaller scale loft above that for storing winter tires mounted on wheels for the Borrego and the Corolla. Looks a lot better with the Yota in it:
In addition to the lofts, other plans include:
-Massive floor cleaning and a new coat of epoxy.
-A LOT more lighting (probably 8' fluorescent tubes).
-Covering the walls entirely with 1/2" OSB so that I can hang pretty much anything anywhere.
-At least two more 20A circuits dedicated to the garage only.
-Replacing the side window with a man door leading to the side driveway (where the Yota gets parked).
-Replacing the single man door in the rear with a double door so that the lawn tractor can be driven into the garage from the rear.
More pics to come soon hopefully...this will be slow and steady as I get my hands on the cash. Hoping to learn a lot here and get a lot of good ideas.
