Awesome build. Glad to hear your thoughts on working with Chelsea Lumber. They will hopefully be starting on my little 30x36 sometime soon (don't know who my contractor will be yet... wonder if I can make requests).

I figured it was a Chelsea lumber package as soon as I saw the 3 courses of treated T&G 2x6s, lol.

Who did your concrete?

WOW, super job.
Awesome project

Thanks guys!

Looks even better with all the vehicles inside.

I agree

Ceiling next or walls?

My son works in Chelsea at Chrysler.

I was just at the dealership! I had my eye on a used dually way out of my price range :willy_nil

The wall between the two areas (splitting into 24' and 56' rooms) will be next. I have some ideas for a 12'x9' sliding door, but within the next year or two I want to be able to heat the clean room.

Chelsea Lumber has a network of contractors they recommend. Larger buildings are done by only a select few I am told. I'm sure you can request but it may add to your wait time. I do highly recommend Delong.

I added an additional row of treated T&G from the standard package. A minimal price increase I recommend doing. For me it was a necessity due to the 5" floor and 2" foam, a standard 4" floor and you wouldn't have to.

Concrete was done by my brother, his former employees (concrete company) and myself. All the prep that nobody will see again was by me.

Olds Cutlass pics

More pics of the cutlass please!!!

So you didn't think I forgot about you, more pics as requested:

From the barn to carwash to as you see it here. This was in 2009.

Anybody ever seen a security system installed with a tubular "pop machine" key in the fender?

Interior - black and in decent shape. The crust of mud on the windows kept the sun off it...

An interesting aside, I found a local upholsterer to fix the seats. He was an older fellow that had the EXACT material for the seats leftover from the 1970's. A few rips and tears fixed and they look like new. I was going to sell them to get Kirkeys but I think I'll keep them in case I change my mind in the future.

Vinyl top, 14" rally wheels, ugly chrome, the list goes of ugly goes on

Borrowed motor on a stand. My father loaned this to me without me asking which I thought was pretty cool. It's a 390HP 427 from a 1967 Corvette that he picked up in the early 80's I think. I glued a Cutlass emblem to the valve cover just because I thought it was funny.

Motor installed shot

Fuel cell, sunk into truck about half it's overall thickness. I have brackets for the top, the bottom has a steel structure holding it in place.

Pre-paint shot showing mockup motor, fiberglass parts, etc.

Straight out of paint with the bumpers and tail pipes bolted back on. A close eye will notice the door handle openings, which are rear handles from a 1990's dodge stratus I think. No locks, the latches have been welded in the unlocked position.

Gloss black vinyl stripes with "Cutlass" cutouts showing flat text

I'm overly proud of this one little detail - Hood pins! I needed something thicker than normal for the 442 hood and wanted them to be trick, so custom aluminum spring loaded pins it is. Between this and 11 or so Dzus the hood is well held down for a car that hasn't moved under it's own power yet:

Gratuitous outside shot of both of 'em cleaned up:

As I type this out I feel a bit like that super shy person that won't shut up when you ask a simple question. So I'll stop here

Most of the rust was cutout and covered by the fiberglass quarters. The metal was cut and flanged, and the quarters riveted and then glued in with some kind of adhesive. A little bit was patched in the window channels but it wasn't as bad as I expected. VFN's fiberglass quarter panels are awesome.

I did not do the bodywork, no patience for that. The guy that did the work was very talented and did more than I could have asked for, especially for a "race car".

You have a thread or pictures of yours anywhere? The avatar shot looks good...

Awesome transformation!

Thanks for sharing,
Shane

Thanks!

Thank you. I'm both very proud and very grateful for all those that helped make this happen. Every time I walk out, turn on the lights and the XM radio... yup, living the dream! And I'm pretty young so I hope to enjoy this for a long time :rocker:

Thanks for the information about the fiberglass, I am doing Fiberglass panels on my rusty 86 3/4 ton Chevy. Do you have a link to more pics of the glass panel instal? I'm curious about what epoxy to use to secure the panels. Sorry to sidetrack your thread feel free to send me a private message if you want.

Sorry for taking so long to answer this. I don't have any more pics of the fiberglass install or details on the process (epoxy used, method, etc.).

The bodyman that did the work did an excellent job but didn't document the process and sadly he is no longer around to ask questions.

It's been a little while since an update so here goes. I've been working in the building and really enjoy it so far. I'm hoping to get a bunch of receptacles hooked up soon since working off one extension cord is well... not fun :dunno:

Onto pictures:

"New" IR air compressor that I need to get hooked up. I am told the compressor was recently rebuilt and the price was right.

Two new assembly and light work tables I put together. I actually like the 2x4 basics kit and I got the plywood free from work from an old shipping crate. I could certainly build them from scratch but I like the finished edges on the corners from the plastic components.

Christmas present assembled. I used some really good polyurethane adhesive/sealant during assembly to replace the cheap foam tape. Testing with my small compressor says it's going to work fine, but it really emphasizes the need to hook the big one up.

A few parts cleaned up and nearly ready to go back in the Trans Am :3gears:

And lastly my dog was upset with me because it was a little cold out...

It's been a while but I have a little exciting news. All the lumber for the interior walls have been purchased and it's warm enough I might get something done

All the fancy CAD and I am resorting to chalk on the floor to see if I like the layout. The office (with windows), mechanical room, and 12' sliding door are all drawn out and I like it.

I'll get you guys something cool to look at in the next few weeks with any luck.

Just a bit of progress this evening. It might look like something soon. Note that the studs are just setting there... I wouldn't nail them in quite that crooked :bounce:

WOW. Loving the 10 foot box, that is nice! I was just thinking about that yesterday how a 10 foot box would be handy for construction and how I was surprised it was not being made by anyone.

I agree! Full disclosure it does still have the bulkhead so think of it as a 8' bed with a 2' compartment in front of it. We didn't think it was worth the extra work involved for a "personal" truck but for a true work truck it would be awesome to have 10' available.

Just a little progress. It's getting a 12'x9' insulated sliding door that I am planning to build very soon. I have a pretty simple design for the sliding door and track hardware planned and I may document that in a separate thread.

To the right of the door header I am sinking a 2x6 so I can mount the door hardware. The header is bigger than needed for a non-load bearing wall but they were leftover concrete form boards so why not.

The logic was anything that fits though the main garage doors can pass between the rooms. Probably overkill but who doesn't like huge sliding doors? :pimpflash

12'x9' Sliding door time:

Firstly, the wall mounted rails were fabricated. I made these adjustable and they were tweaked straight once in place with a string and some of those wood blocks masons use on walls...

The door itself is a sandwich of 1.5" XPS and two layers of 7/16 OSB. I wanted heavy and well, it's heavy (~300# :D) Getting it in place was a challenge.

It slides really well but still needs handles, end stops, and rollers at the bottom. Someday I will skin the inside of the door with something pretty.

And to the pictures:

Found your build yesterday and enjoyed reading. I'm about 2 months away from my 40x80x12 pole barn, so I've got an idea how big it should look now. Nice Cutlass too btw.

Thanks Jeff. As big as it is I can't believe I have it full already. I look forward to your build.

Just found your thread today, thanks for sharing your build & bringing us all along!

I love how much space you have not only in the garage, but around your property too. Did you build your home also, or buy from a previous owner? Love the adult big wheels too, I didn't know about those.:bounce:

No problem! The house was built in 1997 by a older couple that recently retired up north. We bought the house in late 2014. It had everything the wife wanted but no building so it gave me the opportunity to build exactly what I wanted.

And the big wheels are awesome, I ride them around the building occasionally even with everything inside

Nice looking build man !!

Thanks!

Just got caught up on this thread. Very cool space. I have considered doing a "clean room", but doesn't really work in my layout.

Love the cars and the AC!
