Propane boiler for how water heating

About 4 years ago we switched over from oil to propane boiler. So far it has been working great, and it is a lot more efficient than the old oil-fired hot air heating system. I was recently contacted by a local plumbing company that suggested that the boiler should be serviced and de-scaling. Is this necessary or are they just trying to sell me a $349 service that I don't need? The propane company never said anything about servicing the unit yearly nor did the contractor that installed the unit. The unit is a high-efficiency Energy Kinetic System.

See what it says in the owners manual.If you don't have one...get one online.Service depends on water quality and other factors, but it definitely needs to be looked at.

Did you convert the oil boiler to gas or did you go with a new gas boiler? If it was a conversion a thorough cleaning would be necessary at the time of conversion and I’d do it for a couple years to ensure the oil residue is out. A new gas boiler would normally not require de-scaling if the system is operating correctly. when you fill a boiler system you put in a charge of water or glycol/water. With water assuming no constant make-up water being added whatever solid or chemicals are in the fresh water will cook out and it is a small enough amount to not have to worry about. If your system requires constant or frequent fresh water you are adding fresh material which will cook out onto the boiler and associated near boiler piping. On the other hand, if you have glycol in the system it must be tested and maintained
