Propane Experts, need some help

Hi there Garage guys, I have a question I have a propane fireplace with the chimney venting through the roof. This last snow I had water coming in because my vent on the roof is too close to the roof. So my question on an 8/12 pitch roof with double wall propane pipe, How far should the pipe be off the roof, also how high is too high. I had the propane people here today and they said I should shovel the roof, but I have a feeling 1 foot out of the roof is a little low.

Of course water is my worst enemy, I work on power lines. I can play with power all day but water scares the S@@t outta me

The question is:

Is the pipe a chimney or a vent....

either way it likely should be taller, as any air flow coming close to the roof, as wind often would do - could hold the pipe exhaust down or slow it's up flow.

Get it fixed, and get a CO detector.

I know for class A chimneys for wood, coal and oil, the requirement is 3 ft above anything withing ten feet of the chimney. Not sure of the requirement for propane/NG venting but it sounds like you are not high enough.

Its for a propane Fireplace and would be a vent I assume, it is one of those intake and exhaust in one pipe things, Just thin metal with the intake on the outside to cool the inner pipe.

There should be a metal listing plate on the fireplace somewhere, it may be inside an inspection door or even hanging by a chain from the gas valve. This will give you the manufacturer and model number. From there it will be easy to look up the clearances. Most direct vent fireplaces ( those are the ones that use outside air for combustion and have the inner and outer pipe) have a 24" minimum termination from the roof in both the US and Canada.

Generally 2 feet higher than anything within 10 feet, unless it is a power vent.
