Propane Options

I was originally picking out a transmission jack on the Northern Tool website when I noticed a ventless dual fuel heater on sale. After reading a thread about ventless heaters here, I decided against it. I don't want my tools and car rusty.

I have a 20x30x12 detached garage I want heated. I have a propane connection already installed. The garage is insulated and the walls and ceiling are covered with sheet metal. It has a metal roof, I don't want to cut a hole in it. I don't plan on using the heater a lot, just to warm up the garage when I decide to work on something. I live in central IL.

I'm currently leaning toward the Mr. Heater Big Maxx 50,000 BTU.

Do you have any suggestions or personal experiences to help me decide?

I think you would be happy with it. I have the 75,000 btu big maxx in my 32x42. I use a lot of propane but my insulation isn't the greatest. You do need to vent it either thru the wall or roof.

I would buy a hanging heater, such as a Reznor or equivalent. One with a power vent can be piped through a sidewall. You would have a hole in the sidewall, but the heater would be up out of the way, well above combustible vapors that are heavier than air, and would be enabled by simply turning up a thermostat.
I have a natural gas unit in one building and propane in another building where natural gas is not available. They work great and I never have to move or store them.

I'm using the Big Maxx 75K as well in a 28 x 38 X 10.5.
