Propane or kerosene radiant heater...

I'm looking for a heater to use in my shop, 40x40 with 14ft ceiling plus peak. Its a pole building, not a hint of insulation. I would insulate and heat it the right way but it's the inlaws and I can't see justifying it.

So under the conditions I was thinking a radiant heater to just focus on heating me. I figure since theres no insulation whats the point in getting a huge heater to heat the air.

Was thinking a mr heater twin 28,000 btu like this:

Saw a Remington 70,000 btu radiant heater with forced air at menards for 190.

Any thoughts on either of these? How far away can you feel heat with those tank top radiant heaters?

I have a Pro-temp brand heater from Northern, just like the Remington in your link. I LOVE it. It is very quiet. I don't have to turn up the radio, you can talk to someone without raising your voice, talk on the phone, etc. The propane one will be all but useless in the garage you are in. I work in a 30x30 block, with insulated ceiling. I also use a 23k kerosene heater to "maintain" heat between heater cycles or in warmer weather ( warmer than today in Pa.).

Unearthed, Have you had it very long? any problems? Yea i was kind of thinking the propane may be to small. From what I figured up the cost per btu isnt much more then the propane heater.

What Do you use it yours? The manual says 1-k. I was reading the reviews on northern and one guy said the box said factory tested for multiple fuels; Kerosene, JP8/Jet A Fuel, #1 & #2 Fuel Oil, #1 & 2 Diesel.

Kapster, I only use K1 in mine. My box says the same on it about multi-fuel use. The manual states only K1. Its sold everyehere around here, and I have other heaters that take only K1, so no biggie there. I've only had it since heating season started, and have about 25 or so gallons through it. No problems what so ever. Another nice thing is a service/parts center in Homer City, Pa. 45 min drive for me. One down fall (for me) of the heater, is no thermostat control, and not any way to easily add one. It has a ceramic liner in it, and after the switch is turned off the fan runs for 5 min. to cool the ceramic. I was worried when I ordered it about it being a gimmick with the low noise, but I'm very pleased with it.

Forgot to add Kapster, I had be using a 150k torpedo heater in that garage. Great heat. Fast. to the tune of raising the temp 20* in four minutes on very cold days. VERY VERY NOISY. And condensation on everything, especially tools in the toolbox. But I'm working with a 30x30x10. 150K heater with a therostat may be a better choice for you in that size garage, especially without any insulation. could you at least insulate the ceiling with R- max or something quick to put up?

I could probably put something up but like i said i'm really just after warming me up some. I'm used to wearing insulated coveralls and a carhartt over that and still being cold. Especially hands. I'm not looking to work in a t shirt.

Yea that does seem like a sweet price. After hearing i can run it on diesel i'm leaning more that way. We have off road diesel on the farm

Ahh, I like to keep my home shop 65ish. And if you do buy the Remington post up how you like it. I can't believe that there isn't more talk about that type of heater on here. Good luck.

Oh I'd love to have it at 65, but for now just looking for a little heat. Yea i'm surprised too. I even searched online and didnt find anything about them. But i must say after reading the reviews on northern for your heater there was very little negative said. Everyone seemed to love them.

Kerosene tends to have a lot of fumes. These units may be different, but from my experience in my dads old shop, they gave me a headache often.
