barely. I find that w/ those big units running off a small tank, when you crank em up high on really cold days the tank will freeze up.

the bigger tanks dont have this problem as much. But then again, Texas doesnt get subzero, so you may be just fine there.

I have a 30-50k btu propane heater and the instructions say to use a 100# tank. I've been using a 40# tank successfully for 2 years but tried a 20# tank when my 40 ran empty and it wouldn't stay lit.

I've been using a 40k BTU propane torpedo heater for a couple winters now with a 20# tank without issue. The tank will occasionally frost up, but usually it doesn't. The frost has never caused a problem.

This heater is a much larger capacity though so I would at least suggest a 40# tank.

100 pound cylinders run about 175.00 or so. If a tank is frosting on the shell this just means the propane is boiling inside producing vapors just as it's supposed to do! Large draws of vapor make the humidity in the air condence on shell of the tank and thus the frost. Don are you sure your 20 pounder wasn't empty also? That would keep the heater from remaining lit!

I saw a 100# propane tank at Costco the other day for $79 (empty, of course). That's a good price for a tank that holds a lot of propane. I've also seen quite few used large tanks for sale on Craigslist, some with propane as well. Whatever you do, proceed carefully.
