Propane Prices?!?!?!?!

Just today I had the propane tank dropped off and hooked up from the local co-op to heat my 25*27 attached. Reznor 30k hanging and ready to rock. House is electric. I did not have it filled right now due to the fact that it is $4.69!! The tech told me that as of this morning THEIR cost is now $4.75. Had I been thinking ahead I would have booked some this fall (or even 3 weeks ago at $1.87). However, being that I didn't I'm hoping this changes soon. In the mean time I'll heat as needed with a nipco and a 100lb tank I have on hand. I feel sorry for the people that are having to fill at market prices during this time to heat their home. Anyone else in the same boat?

LOL You should listen to the news sometime - this propane cost discussion has been going on for almost 2 weeks. Companies are driving to Houston to pick up supplies that are short up in the NE and central sections. It appears we have plenty and others do not. There is also talk that's it's more profitable to ship it overseas than to sell it domestically.

They're rationing in my area. Only filling to 50% @ $4.69/gal. (todays price). That GOD my lovely wife locked us in this summer @$1.59. There's a discussion on the propane shortage in the heating/ac forum. It's really a mess.

That may not matter.

News story that was just on tv- http://www.myfoxtwincities.com/stor...amily-left-in-cold-as-minn-declares-emergency

Duffy believes she has fallen victim to price gouging, and she's upset that even though they've already paid $578 for their next propane delivery, the 150 gallons they're still waiting for won't even fill their tank. Worse still, the company also wants to charge them an extra $175 for an emergency delivery even though they don't have any money left.

My blaze king woodstove heats the house for "free" and my power bill was 130$ last month but the bbq, that ****** is hell on lpg.

Quite an eye opener about fuel cost volatility eh.

makes me wonder about my 310 gallons I have left on my pre-buy from last year.
although I didn't lock in the price i actually paid for 1000 gallons @ $1.499/gallon.

filled the tank on 1-2-14 and when i called they didn't say anything about a shortage.

But did she really?? If you can't get any it won't matter what the contracted price is. if they limit what you get, they have more to sell a gouging prices....

I hate to say it but there all a bunch of whores in that business.

few years ago when I got tired of the bs,(gouging you in the winter if you ran low because they new you had to buy from them) i decided to buy my own tank.
the company i was leasing the tank from would not sell me a tank and told me that even if i did find someone to sell me a tank that no one would fill it for me.

i said oh really............after I purchased my tank they were all lined up to fill it for me.......even the ******** i had leased the prior tank from.......bunch of whores

What did you pay for your tank? Size? I looked into buying a 100 gal tank new from Northern Tool and it was almost $700, add a regulator (that must be replaced every 12 years) and I'm not sure I could save enough to pay for it. I might just be ahead pre-buying at summer time prices in August.

How different are the prices they quote you to come and fill vs what they would charge you as a leased customer? They can be bastards. Years ago I had a company fill my tank in the summer and the price had gone up 30 cents/gal from the early spring filling to $1.65/gal (1997) WTF? I called a few other companies and they said their regular price at that time (no deals) was around 98 cents/gal. That was the last tank they sold me and switched suppliers.

I paid $1200 for a 500 gallon tank delivered and installed with two new regulators

there usually about .15/gallon cheaper if you own your own tank. but the real savings is in being able to shop.
like when i pre bought last may for this year the company that i bought the tank from was 1.73/gallon but i found this other company that i had never dealt with and they were 1.49/gal..........if you lease your stuck with what they offer and believe me they know it to

Our leased tank price is $0.04 higher than a customer owned tank right now even in these volitle times. I guess I work for one of the afore mentioned companies.

Holy **** stop reviving old threads. I didn't notice the dates and i scared the **** out of me.

Then Ricks post saying it's been a year, ahh relief. I am at 55% right now so some time next month I will need a refill.

Last bill in Dec was $0.74 /l or about $2.85 /gallon and I was told prices are holding recently.

Even at that I am looking into a pellet boiler of some kind to get away from propane.

From what I'm told a 40lb. holds around 8 gallons. I just paid 35.00 to have one filled and the receipt read 5.00 per gallon.

Thats even worse!! 5 bucks a gallon - you're getting robbed!!!

I have a wet tap on one of my home/shop propane tanks to refill bottles - best move I ever made. Takes a little longer to fill one of my 4 gallon heater tanks, but my current propane dealer sells delivered at $2.69 vs drive down to the store and pay $3.99 (plus gas there and back)... If I had to pay $5 a gallon I couldn't afford to heat my shop!

If my math is right, that's $4.69 a gallon...

Places here charge a flat rate for bottles up to 40 lb. Empty or half full, same price. They won't sell small stuff by the gallon. Some places used to - those guys apparently retired a while back. Yes, they are nicking the crud out of the RV folks. Maybe they figure that if people will pay top dollar to drop a bottle and pick up a bottle at the big box store, then they can do about the same thing for a few cents less. I filled two 7 lb (30 gallon) units last year for $50. $25/bottle.

After reading this post, I think I may check and see what a big tank will cost me just so I can get LPG in bulk. I'm going to see what they sell LPG for around here delivered. I might have to buy a big tank and refill my own.

I asked about a wet leg when I had my tank installed: Propane company said they wouldn't do it.

I didn't pursue it, but perhaps it is because I don't own the tank.

I know what you mean. I tried to buy some fittings a while back to fill smal LPG tanks at a place I used to work at at the bosses request and they wouldn't even talk about it to us.

Propane companies are getting real persnickety about everything due to liability and CYA. I've got friend working at COOP selling propane, and they even require information on what furnace is installed in house, and homeowner needs to let them know if any changes are made . . . again CYA.

They do NOT "knowingly" allow small tanks to be filled off of the big ones that "company" is responsible for . . . . I'd guess this certainly relates to Leased tanks . . . thus owned by propane company.

If you own the bulk LPG tank, guess you can do what you want in trying to fill smaller tanks from the big one.

That COOP will not fill small containers from the bulk truck. I was asking him about 100 lb tanks, and he said even those had to be taken to their "retail" refill facility and not filled by bulk truck (ie higher price for the propane at their retail facility).

Bottom line is they want the $3, $4 or $5 gallon for the "hassle / liability" of the small tanks.

Best solution is price shop by phone before taking small LPG tanks anywhere. With proper coupling/hose, you can fill the 20 lb BBQ tanks from a large 1,000 gal tank that you own (especially when it's nearly full and hot day).

I hear you. Needless to say I don't use my shop much in the winter!

My rates went from $3/gallon on approximately 300 gallons last Spring to $4.89 a gallon at the end of December here in NJ. Company is trying to claim that the $4.89 is current market rate which is complete nonsense. After calling around I found a much friendlier provider at $2.10/gallon. This might be the only industry worse than cable providers.

Not a good idea if something goes wrong best case you will loose all your LP in the tank. Around here they wont have nothing to do with it training is impossible. You can refill lots of 20lb tanks for the cost of refilling a 500gl tank.

Where at $1.89

I had a tank installed last fall and the propane company had no problem putting in the wet leg, very handy. It probably depends on where you live, but it would be worth asking.
