$2.88/Gal in my own portable tanks. Don't use it for the house, so couldn't tell you bulk prices.

Bulk price is cheaper then taking a little 5 gal tank in.
If you own your own tank you can buy from any one. If you rent you have to buy from the rental company.

Propane prices are all over the map. If you rent the tank, the supplier can change the price at anytime with notice, and for no reason

A buddy of mine who lives in northern Wisconsin, near Danbury, paid $2.15 per gallon just recently. He burns wood when he is home, but when he is gone for awhile then the main furnace kicks in and that uses propane. I think he said that a few months ago the cost was $1.79 per gallon, but the price went up around the end of the year. He owns his own tank, it's an above ground tank, bought it pretty cheap when some company went out of business. They even delivered it to his house and set it in place.

$2.15 a gallon, rental tank 100 gallon but as mentioned tank is free as long as we use 120 gallon a year. We do, as we have two teenagers... 30 minute showers. Not anymore as I just shut off the unit lol or turn down the unit prior to them getting in.

I'm curious about this as well, as I'm planning on converting from oil to propane in the summer. NG is a pipe dream unfortunately.

Around here (Ontario, Canada), there's very little discount for customer owned tanks. Some suppliers don't offer any discounts at all. It makes owning not that attractive when all things considered. The only advantage I can see is that you can shop around for better prices and not limited to one supplier, but most supplier prices are closely matched.

$2.55 a gallon delivered if you own a tank and $3.00 a gallon if tank is leased , will call prices. Lease tank cost is approx $80 per year for a 120 gallon/400lb tank.

Propane is commodity so it has a market price........then then add regional, seasonal, supply chain, tax and weather components to the pricing

This link is the weekly price of propane which you can see the week 01-09-17 ranges from $4.68 in Fl or $1.18 in IA.

That shows 'residential pricing' it might be more instructive to look at the wholesale price for the product - what your supplier is paying. The residential pricing is skewed by those customers who rent their tanks and are at the mercy of the dealer.

This is the wholesale information. You can get some idea how much your dealer is banging you here. Be realistic, if you have a 50 gallon tank (like I do) you are going to pay top $$$. If you have a 500 or above you should be able to negotiate some real good pricing.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^. Remember the supplier may have options, futures or flat price for the year or for some contracted price for a period of time. The a large supplier may have huge tanks to protect from price fluctuations or maximize profits and provide an uninterrupted supply for the royal customers.

Remember the shortage a few years back and the glut a few years after where wells where burning off propane because it did not pay to ship it or store it.

Trying to play the price game in the middle of the heating season is a challenge for the buyer. The best buyer play is getting a large supply in the off season. Even then it can be a chance or roll of the dice.

Wisconsin tracks pricing and has comparisons of all home heating choices:

I paid $0.47 per liter (or $1.82 / gal) back in August. I rent a 1000 gal tank, which gets filled once a year in the summer, when prices are normally at their lowest.

The tank rental is supposed to be $250 per year but i'm on year 3 and no rental charge yet

It was .99 per gallon delivered last summer. I waited till Sept and it jumped to around $1.10 per gallon delivered. Currently about $1.50 per gallon delivered.

Filling small bottles at the same place is about $2 per gallon.
