Propane Question?

I use Propane to heat my shop and my 100 gallon tank ran out last night (big surprise since I just checked a couple of weeks a go). Anyway I called for a refill and was told there is at least a seven day backlog before they could refill my tank. This in NC - How long does it take to get a refill in your area of the country?

Is there more than 1 supplier in your area? Call another supplier and tell them if they can get out there to fill the tank you will use their services for future fill ups.

7 days seems excessive.

I don't use propane for anything but my grill so I can't say for sure but I have buddies in the business and they are working overtime now to get tanks filled. Even one of the office guys is running a truck with the smaller tanks to help out. I'm guessing this is their busiest time, what with days off and cold weather all hitting at the same time.

The LP supplier in our area has a hard time keeping up with the residential tanks this time of year. If the tank is run out the system has to be vacuum tested and then all pilot lights relit.(They can't fill the tank and leave) If there are any government assisted homes(free gas) the tanks are very small as required. The tanks run out quickly and they have to go thru the relight process. The suppliers lose a lot of time doing other things than filling tanks. Probably alot less blown up homes from leaks inside though.

The LP suppliers here in this part of Missouri won't come out to fill just a 100 lb. tank. You have to take it to them or if your getting gas for your home tank they will do it, but never for just a 100 pounder.

Generally, the tanks belong to the company and you only rent them. It took me several weeks and a lot of angst to have Amerigas remove two tanks so that I could replace them with a local supplier.

I use two 125 gallon tanks hooked in tandem for my shop.

Just recently our supplier started a schedule. Our day is Monday and if we don't call before Friday we have to wait a week or pay an emergency fee. I also have a 500gal tank.

Take it to an RV refill station or use 20lp tanks until you get them filled. I go threw 100lb a year and the LP company didn't like it and ended up taking there tanks back. I use an RV setup now with two 20lb tanks. When they get empty they do freeze up the last bit.

p.s. sorry I thought you had 100lb tanks not 100gl tanks! Disregard the above.

I changed suppliers after they let me run dry 3 times...once in mid Jan. at 3am. I was on a schedule with a creditcard on file. This guy couldn't keep employees and for me the third time was the charm.

I'm suprised they come out for less than a 200 gallon delivery. I misread you tank size at first too. I didn't realize there wre 100 gallon tanks.

Some gas stations will fill them too.A couple in my area do this including the hardware store. Some propane companies change hands which can be bad sometimes.Had Excel and switched to Amerigas.Excel would not set the reserved price anymore and was treated like **** by them.Switched to Amerigas and have been treated very well so far.Plus the price is much cheaper.

Last year I bought a big max 48k heater for the garage. I use a 100lb tank on the side if the garage. I shake it to check out how much I have (approx).
I need a refill with in a couple of days if I use it, so what I do is put it in my pickup and go to the best price in town... They either fill it in the truck or put it on the ground and help me load it... Current price in my area is $10.99 for 20lbs if I go to them(no big deal). Hell I just had to go to another place that was open yesterday and paid 19.00 for 20lbs for the grill... I go through about 150lbs in the winter.... Only used every so often....stevo

I live in a small town 36 miles east of Cincinnati and I can get the same day. I have to take the tank in to get it filled they won't come and fill or swap a small tank.

EDIT: I thought you had a 100lb tank also. That is the size that I have (100lb) and I have to take it to them. They said I would have to have at least a 125 gallon thank for them to come and refill. I also own my 100lb tank.

Upright or laydown tank? If it's a laydown, I'd consider making a trailer out of it.

Back in the 70's & 80's my dad had a water pumping company and we had skid mounted and trailer mounted propane tanks (bigger, probably 250 gallon?) to be able to hook up to water pumps (318 and 440 chryslers).

At least then you could drive it into town to get filled.

My suggestion is to remove your 100 gal tank and hook it up to your 20 pound gas grill tamk and wait out you service company to fill it up. Don't even think about loading up your 100 gal tank the propane alone weighs 425 pounds not counting the weight of the tank, unless you have access to a forklift.
Just my $ .02

First thing I did was try other dealers (Amerigas was one), they are ten days behind and another wouldn't fill my tank because it wasn't theirs. I have been using my gas grill tanks but that is a PIA. Thanks for the ideas though guys but I guess I'm just going to have to wait and hope pipes don't freeze if the small tanks run out in the night.

Ive got two tanks from two different vendors, to CMA. Both vendors come out on a schedule based on the previous years usage. I keep 1500 gals, a 1000 and a 500. I don't like the idea of "running low". Id keep more, but they wont install more than a 1000 gal at a residence.

our entire house is on propane... we have a 500 gallon tank... it takes about a week after we call to the time it is filled... unless we are almost out, or out... then they're there within a few hours..
even if you rent the tank another company can fill it.... how is the owner supposed to know who's propane is in there... we had the company we use now fill our old tank that was owned by another vendor.. the old company raised there rates by 1.10 a gallon overnight... the new company filled it, then had a new tank ready to swap out on the next fill.... told the old company to come get their tank in the next 2 days, or it was headed to the dump...

I also have a 500 gallon tank for our house, and we are renting the tank from the propane co., so we are on a auto fill. In the winter months, they come out about every 40 days or so and top us off and in the summer it is several months.

Now, at my business, our fork lift tanks can only be swapped out on a Weds, since that is when they are in the area. So we have two tanks. When one runs out, we call to schedule then to swap us out on the next Weds they are in the area. So it could be 7 days or it could be 1 day, all depends on what day we call.

So it could be that you called after they have already been in your area, and will be back in your area in week. So to answer your question, yes it is a little long, but no if you missed them being in your area.

I know that I am going to have to watch the 500 gallon tank on my garage, since I purchased the tank and I am not on a auto fill, then I will have to call it in, then I would be able to give you a better answer when that time comes.

I can't believe the problems some of you guys have. Rural areas must be a little different. I have to check my tank but when I call, if I am almost out, they will be there in a few hours. If I just need a refill, they are there no later than the next day. Tank rental on my 250 gallon tank is free as long as I buy two tanks a year from them.
