How safe are those heaters that you can attach to your propane tanks? Can I use it in my garage with the doors closed or am I going to get poisoned :(
I want to keep my garage warm overnight while the paint on the walls cures/dries.

Anything that burns propane and in a confined space will build up CO. colourless, odorless and 200 times more likely to bind to your hemoglobin than O2. Problem once it does it stays there and won't allow O2 to bind with the hemoglobin and you die.

That being said I used a similar heater all winter and just made a point of cracking some windows and I eventually installed an exhaust fan.

Another product of this combustion in your garage will be water, if you have a reasonably air tight garage with vapour barrier and good windows and doors the added humidity may not be very good for your painting project.

I used a propane salamander heater all winter while I was building my shop. I made sure I had some ventilation so fresh air would continue to mix in.

I use an unvented propane heater in my garage. No noticable CO buildup (I've two monitors, and test them frequently). But, they do consume oxygen, and put a bunch of water vapor into the air leading to condensation.

For those reasons I'm getting a proper vented heater for next year.
