If one of these is working properly do they make CO?
If it is complete combustion, it should make CO2 and H20?
I know Ice Fishermen use them in their Ice Huts.

So long as it is not running in an oxygen deprived environment, and nothing has clogged the venturi openings, catalytic heaters do not produce significant CO.

They will create some pretty nasty gases when solvents and chemicals are passed through the “flame”.

Those heaters typically do not have any sensors for oxygen depletion. They do not discharge a level of CO that is a concern until oxygen levels fall, and there is no safety device for that. They are intended to be used in places that are drafty with adequate outside air infiltration. If you use one in a sealed up space, you are inviting trouble.

Thanks, I've always used one in a drafty shop environment. The new shop building is a lot tighter! The plan is to put in a Big Maxx or Reznor but a friend of mine has the infrared tube type heaters in his Construction shop. He highly recommends those instead of a Big Maxx but can't tell me if it is a fuel consumption issue or the dust / noise issue.

About all gas flame makes CO for just a moment as the gas heats the heat exchanger. Gas stoves do until the oven gets warm. Gas cooktops do until the pan heats up, that is the nature of gas heat. CO readings are not taken until oven has been on 15 minutes for UL and other certifications. But that heater should not put out any CO until O2 in the room is gone.

They make ALL of the above ! I use a double burner version in my leaky, uninsulated garage hours at a time in winter.

They do, but catalytic burners burn pretty complete when they're hot. When all you see is a glowing screen and nothing else, it's not making significant amounts of CO. That's because the combustion is so complete, that no carbon chains are getting out.

If you put your hand over a venturi hole while it was burning well, you can see a faint greenish flame start to appear over the screen. The visibly incandescent exhaust is a sign of incomplete combustion, and CO being produced when it runs rich.

FWIW, I had a single burner one of these, and while I really liked what it did, I found that a quartz electric heater cost me less in the long run (because of the exorbitant costs of refilling my BBQ tanks here), so I ended up selling it.

Properly running, they should make minimal CO.

But they still make CO2 and H2O, so some fresh makeup air is still required.

What is a top brand for one of these things in the 20K BTU range?
I was just looking for something to heat a 10x10x8H "tent" in one of my shops so I bought a Dyna-Glo TT15CDGP 15,000 Liquid Propane Tank Top Heater from Amazon. The darn thing was DOA, wouldn't pass gas at all. Returned immediately.

Dyna-Glo is the biggest. Were you holding in the red pushbutton? It has an automatic valve shutoff that needs to get hot to activate (just like the thermocouple on a pilot).

I bought online last night a 50k Big Maxx from Menards for $345 with in store pickup as the Sale ends 12/16. Won't get the piping kit for a while as it is another $300 or so. At least I can get it hung for now!
I had an 11% Rebate Card for $12 but couldn't figure out how to apply it? I'll ask at the Store if there is a way to do it.
