Propane tank leaking out rear

Just want to confirm I’m ok? I use 100 pound propane tank with trash can type reddy heater in garage. Tank is a year old. Just got it filled and think they overfilled it. When they filled it the temp was 25f. Today I go out to garage and distinct smell of odorant. It’s about 60f. Heard hiss from rear of valve. This is pressure release valve right? Presently have the heater outside the door running to bleed off gas as I’m assuming increase in temp and fluid level is causing this?

Yes, I believe that the valves do have a pressure relief. I believe it just looks like a tiny drilled hole. Yes, the pressure in the tank will increase according to temperature. I think you are doing the right thing. Just make sure the releasing gas is not blowing so that it would blow into the heater's flame.

Thanks ran it for an hour and noticed no icing on regulator nor the overflow so should be good.

IIRC the valves have a bleeder valve on them, at least the regular bbq size tanks do. Little screw on the valve to help release air/pressure when filling. Guy at propane refill place used a flat screwdriver to loosen it one time to let some air out. Might wanna make sure that is tight if you’ve got one.

It could be either the bleeder valve with a knurled or slot head (about 1/2" in diameter) or the over fill valve. make sure the bleed screw is SNUG, not supper tight. and all connectors are tight and not leaking (use dish soap) and you should be good to go.

Yea definitely not the bleeder although I do have one. It was coming out the back which has a vent. Seems good now. I was going to just open that bleeder but the thought of metal on metal with that smell got me nervous.

Usually not good having gas coming out the rear unless it’s your own

You will be surprised at how full it still is! I had that happen last winter. Solution was tank outside to burn it off as you did. With it cold outside I could pour water on the tank to create a frost line to follow. When the line got down below the top curve of the tank, then I felt safe!
