Propane Tank Question

I have 2 one hundred pound tanks that are used to heat my garage and also are used for the grill. The last year or so I am using more propane then I have used in past years. The propane company came out and put a gauge on the lines to check for leaks and none were found. When one tank is empty it switches to the other tank automatically. I think there is a problem with the valve switching to the other tank before the first tank is empty. When they replace the tank I have no idea how much propane is left in the tank that is taken away. Any ideas? Thanks...

I don't think I would ever trust one of those "automatic" valves ! If it cuts over "early" how would you ever know ?

If it were me, I would put a rubber hose "whip" on the end of the pipe from the garage and run one bottle until the heater quits and then switch by hand. Inconvenient, but that is the only way to know for 10% certain you have used the entire bottle.

Hint, change that hose every 10 years !

Perhaps it is time to discuss placing a larger tank at that location. A 275 might be better for you. Have a 100 for back-up. Actually, the question should be, how many 100's are you going through.

I've always advocated for purchasing as large a tank as possible and buying in the "off season". My daughter owns a 500 and bought in June for $1.33/gal. I think it is up around $2.50 now locally. I have the service manager at the local lp company looking for a used 500 or 1000.

I am using about 6 tanks a year. I am switching to a 120 gallon next week.
